kempicus (192), Wellington, New Zealand Dec 8, 2007 Strange beer! Smells reminiscent of fruity marzipan almost like the smell when a bag of “sour snake” jellies is opened. Ironically the flavour is quite tart almost cidery in the way that a lambic is sour and very dry and appetising, the high alcohol percentage is hard to pick.
Sully (1362), Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia Mar 31, 2008 Beautiful copper colour in the glass. The head is lasting but is the fleeting type that you see in a beer of this strength. The nose is caramel sweet and quite subtle but the real letdown was the taste of things to come. Is this too young? I am trying bottle 555 of batch 1 and am wondering if it needs a lot more ageing. There is a distinct tang that presumably doesn’t come from the malt I would hope but perhaps the manuka honey. Does it need a few years in the cellar for this to smooth into what was hoped to be a knock-out beer? Other raters have commented but is it because of the deliberate intention of the brewer or an error in brewing. My vote is for the latter. Bugger. M0RHI (1026), Luxembourg, Luxembourg Jan 27, 2008 Bottle, cgarvieuk coolbeans party. Dark chestnut, thin off-white head. Nose is sweet, barley malt, sugary, mellow. Sweet and sugary. TheGrandMaster (1490), Auckland, New Zealand Jan 14, 2008 Bottle (2007) out of The GrandMaster’s homecoming box (courtesy of yalnikim), pours a clear rose red with a bubbled off-white head. Very aromatic, with rose petals, ginger, cloves and pepper. A honey sweetened palate, which sours in the finish with some effervescence. Riesling-like, with caramal flavours and some pepperyness.
