1.3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 4/20
500 ml bottle sold as “Pinkus Original Obergärig Alt” bought at Great Food Hall in Pacific Place, Admiralty during the store’s Oktoberfest promotion.
Translucent light golden honey colour; One finger head and soapy foam which fades in 40 seconds; Very little lacing and fizzy carbonation;
Quite decent sweet aroma of malt, with light doses of honey, raisins, dark fruits, and hint of grass; Very light sweet taste of light lager malt, with hint of tartness, bread, light biscuit, light wet cardboard, light lemon and mild grass; Light body, slick palate; Taste profile is un-Alt-like, dominated by light lager malt taste, shades of sourness, and not much roastyness. Dry and bready, with wet cardboard being sneaked in. What the f... Not much hoppiness either, just hint of grassy nose, shades of lemon and mild grass taste, and very low and empty bitterness for a hollow, slightly sour finish;
Dry after taste; Quite easy but weird to mouth.
Comments: The label states this is an organic Alt, but the session points otherwise - golden colour, some basic good dark fruit nose, no roastiness - more like a Helles with bits of Alt elements being thrown in. Being organic is not an excuse. Drain pours after half a glass.

2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
500ml bottle from Bierzwerg@home. Clear and folden appearance with minimal white head. Aroma has light herbal and braady notes. Taste is lightly bitter. Palate is quite light with fizzy carbonation. Way different from other Altbiers I’ve had in the past. More like a Pils or Hellea with little "Altish" added.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Bottle from McTapps - thank you, Sabine! Pours clear pale golden with stable white head. Clear aroma of malt and yeast with notes of hops. Bitter, hoppy flavour with pronounced estery notes. Bitter, estery finish with sparse notes of paper. Soury touches. OK but quite different from other Altbiers I have had.

2.2 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
500mL bottle purchased at Total Wine Arden. The aroma has a lot of gumball and light banana character. Light DMS corn-like character as well. Really doesn’t make me think of an Altbier. Transparent yellow body with a small, fizzy, quickly dissipating white head present. Again, not what I would expect from the style. Starts with a light tart astringency, before some pretty gnarly boiled vegetable flavors come through in the middle. Finishes with more tartness and acidity. This is really difficult to enjoy.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
My first altbier! Pours murky dark yellow with a small white quickly receding head. Aroma of sweetly tart cherries, some alcohol, not much else.
Flavor is sweet up front with the cherry and honey, then fades into pilsner malt characteristics. Light and lots of carbonation. Overall, a small step up from a pale lager if you ask me. Meh.

1.1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 4/20
1pt, 9floz. served in a Dogfish Head pint glass
A - Pours a hazy orange color with an odd hue of green. Stark white sinks pretty quick.
S - Soured stone fruit, grapes, salty limes, hay, grain, faint sour berry aroma.
T - Stale grain, hay, chalky yeast, thin honey, faint peaches and general stone fruit. It turns more grassy in the middle and has a tangy sweetness to it. Finishes sweet and tangy.
M - Light thin body with low to medium carbonation.
A strange brew for sure. I almost thought it was brewed from lager yeast. Odd tangy notions that didn’t blend well with a ho hum base beer. I like the fact that it’s organic but this is a no go.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pinkus Münster Alt has a thick, foamy off-white head, a hazy, somewhat bubbly, yellow-golden appearance, and a fairly heavy amount of lacing left behind. The aroma is of very aged, cellared, over-ripe light fruit, dank grain, and mold, plus sweetness and an unusual hop zing. Taste is of those things, plus lemony sweetness, light bitterness, biscuit, and water. Mouthfeel is light and watery, with some carbonation prickle, and Pinkus Münster Alt finishes lager like- crisp and refreshing. Overall, this is a very different beer, and I would recommend it to the adventurous types. RJT
