Although a Session Ale is not a formal BJCP style, it is a historical style of beer similar in spirit to a Mild Ale or Ordinary Bitter. The term “session” originated from a British tradition, where people spent more time drinking in their local pubs than their homes. One would often say they are going to the pub for a “drinking session” with their mates. Craft Brewers have begun to brew hoppier versions of these English Ales with American hops and an American spin. Calma Muerta is like taking what we love about an IPA and making it into a 4.8% ABV beer that you can “session” all day long. Fruit forward hop profile in the nose provides citrus, grapefruit and lemon notes that blend together creating complex aromatics reminiscent of Fruit Loops. The bright fruit from the hops carries through the taste and finishes clean and dry with a soft grain characteristic. The beer’s light bitterness provides a “sessionable” balance.

Lightly hazy amber color with a medium sized, off white head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrus fruits, floral hops, pine, orange, and light grass. Taste of citrus, pine, orange, and some sweeter grapefruit in the finish. Really nice pale ale.

Draught. Clear orangish amber pour with a small quickly receding head. Aroma is malty, clean, grains, but not overwhelmingly so. Flavor is grains, faint hop earthiness. Very dry mouthfeel with excellent, lively carbonation. Really is a solid session ale, no off flavors, clean finish. Want to sit around with a growler of this and watch football.

Pint at Pinthouse. Pours with a hazy orange hued body with a medium sized white head with slightly lower than expected retention. Aromas are mostly hops: citrusy, floral, grassy. Pretty clean both yeast and malt wise. Flavors are citrusy, grainy bready. Medium bitter. Very clean. Lively carbonation, dry. Good balance. Nice session beer.

(Draught) cloudy light gold, rib of one white bubbles. Nose of biscuit, grapefruit peel, cane sugar. Taste of grapefruit, biscuit, agave, lightly spicy. Very carbonated and dry. Good but man o war and iron genny are better.

Hazy strong golden color. Thick white head. Very earthy rich, danky aroma with a little grassyness and bitterness. Delicious flavor of pilsner malt and Saaz? hops. Well balanced. Strong beer bite. Intricate white lacing on the glass. A fine beer.
