3.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (4359) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - SEP 7, 2012UPDATED: OCT 15, 2012 750 ml bottle from Printers Row (Chicago, IL). Pours a richly ruby red glowing hue, reddish pink glow throughout, deeper amber copper elements, well hazed with cakey offwhite head, stays as a mellow layer, laces well with a touch of berry hue to it. Aromas are blueberries, largely blueberry skins, lots of lactic acid, yogurt and a touch of stomach acid, odd musty funk. Lemons, sour fruit and berry. Wheaty malts, bread, but very lactic. Initial is much different than the nose, which offered an odd funk. Richly sour and tart up front, lots of lactic acid, lemons, and yogurt. Some straw, bready malts, firm sourness keeps up front on this lighter bodied beer. Blueberry fruit comes into the fold as we get further in, blueberry skins, pulp, with some richer fruit leaning elements in the middle. Sour lactic lemon and yogurty elements. Sour blueberries, lactic, wheat, bread as we move through the middle. Lingering firm lactic and blueberry elements, soured fruit into the backend. I wouldn’t call this complex, but it’s not supposed to be. Sour, light, and fruity. A richer lactic element that is firmly sour but not acedic in any way or ovewhelming for me. Some muffiny elements at times jump in lightly. The nose is a bit harsh at first, a bit funky but not in a good way. As it settles, this issue clears up. Curious as to what that was.. the berry itself or the senses adjusting to a lactic bomb? Overall, the beer is choice. Sour and rich, a firmly sour fruited Berliner that gets some life from the fruit addition. Firm and lingering lactic elements really give some pep. At 4 percent, you can’t beat this in the sour realm. Really good sessioner that offers richer flavors, zingy lactic/sour elements, and a genuine Berliner feel (not artificially enhanced).
ReRate: Bottle opened for Bears/Packers. Immediately a more sober me detects a highly bleu cheese and sweat socks nose. Really hard to get anything else. The aroma eventually settles out, leaving a tart and tasty blueberry Berliner, lots of yogurt and lactic sourness. It preaches a flavor I enjoy, but the nose really detracts. Gorgeous pour, good flavors, a bit harsh at times on the palate. I enjoy this but that nose has to be reeled in. Gonna save a few to see what becomes of it. Look forward to the next one. Really noticed that nose a TON more this time around, and it overall detracts from this bad boy quite a bit.

Bottle shared with friends. Pours a light blue color, slightly hazy. Aroma is a weird mix of blueberries, blue cheese and sour funk. Though that combo seemed a bit odd to me it didn’t really take away from the drinking experience, as I went back from 2nd’s. Nice solid beer!

Pours a very thin body with a head that recedes to nothing instantly. Bretty aromas with a mouthfeel that follws in slight barnyard sourness. Very crisp, dry. Sessionable. A light funky brunch with blueberry pancakes and blueberry Berliner Weisse

WOW! Smells like the trash can at a Blue Cheese Eating Competition. Straight up stinky cheese, vomit, sour milk, poop, and gym socks. First time a beer has ever made me gag from a smell. Taste had a tinge of berry and lemon that were immediately CRUSHED by gag inducing vomity cheese. This beer is an atrocity on epic proportions. Just now seeing that they actually recalled it which is a very good thing. How anyone that has had batch 31 can rate it higher then macro lagers is completely insane. My kitchen drain still stinks this morning have DP’ing this thing and then pouring liquid plumber down it.

Batch 51 bottle. Pour is quite striking - deep reddish purple with a medium pink head. Like a cross between red wine and rose wine, except carbonated. Aroma and flavor are subtle with light sour notes, faint hints of berry, and faint sweetness. Quite effervescent. This is very drinkable and very good looking. Flavors are all very subtle.

Bottle shared by a friend. Pours a pinkish-amber color with a medium fizzy pinkish-white head that evaporates steadily. Spotty lacing. Aroma of berries, wheat and funk. Light-bodied with a mildly tart fruit character and notes of wheat and yeast. The finish is fruity with a berry aftertaste. Decent overall.
