3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber courtesy of tkrjukoff. Pours black with a big frothy dark mocha head that slowly dissipates while leaving lots of thick lacing and trace on the glass. Smell is sweet, fruity and hoppy with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, tropical fruit hard candy, pine, resinous wood, peaches, papaya, star fruit, powdered sugar, salty liquorice, grapefruit juice and dark roast coffee. Taste is tiny sweet and very bitter with roasted malts, ammonium chloride, black pepper, wood, burnt cookies, caramel, oily pine, resin, unripe mango, star fruit, pumpernickel bread, very astringent black tea, grapefruit rinds, dried apricots and orange peal. Mouthfeel is oily bitter, heavy astringent and medium to full bodied. Finish is bitter with grapefruit rinds, roasted malts, ammonium chloride, burnt caramel, pine, wood, dark bread, dried apricots and star fruit. Way too bitter but otherwise nice...

Pours black with low beige head. Nice lacing. Aroma is of chocolate, roasted malt, alcohol. Taste is of chocolate, roasted malt. Palate: Full bodied. Low carbonation. Overall: Nice roast features. Good, but this is not a Black IPA in me books.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
bottle shared by tom10101, thanks brah. pours very dark brown, almost black, with a small yet reviving and persistent beige head, nice lacing. fresh roasted cereals, strong fresh coffee - bodum-like, some burnt and lightly smoky notes, dry molasses and maple, bold piney and resinous hops, citrus zest, spices - licorice-oriented. moderate carbonation, medium to full body - heavy for a black ipa even though it clearly wasn’t the intent here, sweetish and assertive bitter coffee-piney finish. enjoyed!

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle (22 oz). Thanks to Rich for this one! Black with a medium beige head and good lacing. Aroms is of resinous notes, citrus, roasted malt, liquorice, vanilla and a touch of mint. Taste is better, mostly because there’s less liquorice... slightly sweet with resinous notes, citrus, roasted malt, vanilla and light bitter finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Oily mouthfeel. Slightly dry finish. More like an hoppy Stout than a Black IPA in my opinion. Good balance. Interesting.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Poured dark black with aromas of roast, light vanilla, some tea, light citrus and pine as well. Flavors are the same earthy flavors and some roast. Decent black ipa.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Interesting take on an imperial stout. Along with nice roasted malts the citrus hops make this very complex.

Batch 93. Probably 6 months since I bought it. Light swallowing black with persistent ring. Nose is medicinal menthol, eucalyptus, burnt malt, touch of coffee. Pretty thick, ashy char, bitter hops, and minty finish. Complex and unique stout.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pitch black coloured body with absolutely no light penetrating the beer at all and a thin, oily deep dark brown head - very nice looking, like an oyster stout almost and closes to an imperial ipa - not a black IPA. Aroma of biting piney and citrusey hops coupled with a ridiculously amount of deeply roasted malt, alcohol, anise and a bit of vanilla. Full-bodied; Strong roasty flavour with anise, oak, vanilla, cherries and bunches of bright hops all come together very nicely with one trying to overtake the others ever single second - but the roasted malt winning out most of the time. Aftertaste is super deep with a lot of complexity, but a big bitterness related to the malt and a little coffee note, all with a light sweetness and some pungent hops - still after a few minutes following a sip. Overall, a great black IPA, with tons of flavour, a great complexity and easily one of the best black IPAs or hoppy [lighter] imperial stouts i’ve ever had. If this was labelled three floyds, it would be even higher rated - but this is the real deal, a great beer that should be sampled if you can find it..and if you can find it, it’s best to buy a few bottles - I wish I would have, but i’ll try to find it again the next time in Chicago! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Binny’s in Chicago (South Loop), Illinois on 21-August-2013 for US$9.99 sampled at home in Washington in advance of running the 2013 USMC Marine Corps Marathon on 25-October-2013.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bomber via Archer Liquors, Chicago, pours a dark black color with a nice java head. Nose is roasted malt with bitter hops, very well balanced. Taste is full of flavor, deep chocolate with a well balanced bittersweetness. Texture is thick and finishes on sweet fruity chocolate notes. Superb ! Quaff Score 9 / 10

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours black with a brown head and aroma of hops, chocolate and roasted malt. Taste is complex, lots of roasty, chocolate, coffee notes with underlying bitter hoppy notes with bitter and roasty tones coming through in the finish. Great black IPA, roasted malt and hops come together nicely
