THE Sour and Saison tasting. Another Rogue entry - tee hee! Very dark brown beer, big tan head. Smooth palate. Mild fine carbonation. Rich dark malt with a trace of roast. Nice hops - good and fresh and quite orange like. Pretty much does what it says on the tin and does it very well. Smooth, hoppy and very drinkable.

Bottle at THE Sour and Saison Tasting, London. Many thanks to Ken for adding a bit of variety to the menu. Pours black-brown with a strong, beige foam head. Lots of roasted malts and burnt pine on the nose. Medium to big sweet flavor with strong pine, burnt brown sugars, wood, grapefruit and other fruit sugars. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Resinous finish, some anise and herbs, sturdy hop character, burnt grass, cocoa, earth, strong roast. Great balance, not abrasive or anything. Classic black IPA. Awesome.

Bottle. Poured clear dark brown color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted and produced excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy complex toasted malt, earthy and alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy toasted balanced bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer

Bottle@ Steve’s house. Thanks! Pours a deep brown/black appearance with a brown head. Very roasty, burnt tar, chocolate, light vanilla aroma. Bitter, very burnt, dark chocolate, charred, tar, a bit woody, piney hoppy flavor. Intense chocolate, tar, and piney flavor.

Dark pour and one of the few really nice black IPA’s as of late. Love the mix of the dark roasted malt and the hops. Not overly roasty, not overly hopped. Great balance.

Bottle... Pours black with a small, creamy, beige head. Great retention. The bouquet is a merger of mocha, vanilla and metal. Medium-bodied with stinging carbonation. The flavor leans lightly sweet overall, offering notes of dark chocolate and café con leche flanked by a moderate amount of burnt and rindy bitterness. Deeply roasted, bittersweet finish. Bottle courtesy of KickInChalice!

Bottle on Amtrak Train 506 between Portland and Seattle (from Binny’s South Loop) 08/11/12. Batch # 010. Dark black with a big dirty tan head - this looks the bollocks! Nose is dark roast malt, light hops, chocolate, molasses, leather, wood, tobacco, touch of smoke. Taste follows, bitter chocolate, a little hops, some pine, a touch of soap. Full bodied with soft carbonation, smooth on the palate, dry bitter finish. Good stuff but this really came across as to me more of a stout than a Black IPA! I was picking up pine and hops and bitterness, but the stout elements maybe shaded it 55-45 for me !
