Bottle and served in my Pipeworks snifter: Pours a deep brown with some ruby highlights topped by a beautiful tan frothy head and some lace. The aroma smacks you upside the head with charred coffee beans and a touch of chocolate, tobacco and leather, some resiny, juicy and catty hops that complement the roast. Just a touch of boozy esters too. Really it smells like a Coffee Black IPA and that is a good thing!

The taste is full force coffee, chocolate, walnuts, resiny fruity hops and a earthy undertones. It is like someone amped up Coffee Stout with more alcohol and more hops. This is a time when I am all onboard with the hop selection versus malt, UTTERLY YUMMY STUFF HERE! The mouth feel is oily but not sticky, a bit metallic on the finish. Move over Founders for Breakfast Stout has some company at the morning table. Great Job Guys for taking a very good Impy and making it even better!! My favorite brew behind North & Western and ahead of N vs U!

In short: A basic big coffee stout. Just ok.
How: Bottle 22oz, post-HF FoFA 2013.
The look: Black body topped by a small tan head.
In long: The strong nose is intense used coffee filter along with some charcoal. In mouth the beer offers a thick heavy body that is carbonated enough. Taste is overcooked caramel, old cup of black coffee, mild vanilla notes. A bit of a boiled vegetables flavor developing from the high roast. A straightforward coffee stout which unfortunately didnít offer a fun coffee character, too much like used coffee filter instead of nice roasted coffee beans. Decent beer but slightly below average for the style. And on a more linguistic note, I think Abduction is too strong of a word when talking about kidnapping of a young children, I prefer to call it Surprise Adoption.

22 oz bottle from Printers Row (Chicago, IL). Pours a thick blackish opaque pour. A black brownish pour is deep, dark, thick with a motor oil-esque feel. Small brownish head dies to a ring, laces small overall. Deep hues and body. Aromas are a good deal of coffee, roasty and earthy, some more secondary espresso like vibrancy of flavors, gentle yet firm vanilla bean. Cocoa, coffee, and roast. Caramel and toffee, biscuits. Some gentle red and dark fruit make a mellow appearance but much more secondary than it is in base Abduction. Nose asserts itself a little more as it settles in the glass. Quite pleasant, more restrained than some of the big brooding Coffee RIS options but nice. Initial is some more cherry elements, black cherry, richer coffee, roast, and espresso hit the palate, some vanilla. Biscuits, thicker black and toffee malts. Cocoa, caramel, and biscuits. A fuller body has some mellow carbonation, could use a bit more. The middle and backend make an appearance of that red fruit and medicinal cough syrupy feel I personally get with Abduction. The coffee element killed it out up front, but into the backend the coffee mixes with that presence. Jabs of coffee, espresso, vanilla, roast, and thicker sticky malts. At times that cough syrup feel interferes for me a bit. A touch of dryness at times, roast, toast. Some cocoa, coffee jabs firmly at times, letís the Abduction base show more at others. A bit hot, touches of cough syrup on the backend in and out, mixing with a good coffee vibe, toast, thicker big malts, some dryness and a touch of ash or coolness. Iíd call this an improvement over regular Abduction.. But the cough syrup feel really hits me with this beer. The oaked and barrel aged versions seem to kill that for me though (from homebrew stuff and FoBAB) and make a markedly higher scoring beer for me. Better than the original but maybe this just isnít my type of RIS. Solid offering.. Coffee gives some fun and enjoyable flavors. Cool or cough syrupy feel into the backend is improved but still present from the original.
