3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 markwise (3777) - North of Tampa, Florida, USA - MAY 11, 2013
Really interesting beer- cheers to the kind soul who opened this at RBWG Grand Tasting. Pours a hazy brown with an off-white head. Nose is some sweetness, big spice, some savory notes, some pepper, and some rye. Flavor is similar with a lot of spices happening at once- pepper, rye, mustard seed, and some sweetness along with the smoke and savory. Very complex beer with a lot going on. Medium in body and memorable.

Dark amber pour with a khaki head. Really spicy nose. Lots of pepper and caraway. Chocolate, smoke, and meaty, some cinnamon, and a bit of earth. The flavor is a bit reminiscent of pastrami. Meaty, smokey, and peppery. Caraway, pumpernickel, and a touch of chocolate. Sweet bread, cinnamon, and a bit earthy.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 12/20 StoutHead (228) - DENMARK - MAY 5, 2013
Bottle @ home. Batch 61. Pours a deep ruby red with a minimal mocca head. Spicy aroma absolutely makes me think of pastrami. :-) Taste is so thick and heavy of fruits and spices it makes me think of Mikkellers Mexan Ranger. Very sweet and full bodied with a smoky aftertaste and a bit of alcohol in the aftertaste. Complex and interesting ale-type beer but a bit too fruity-weird for me.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Brigadier (2230) - Bloomington, Indiana, USA - APR 27, 2013
22 ounce bottle
I picked this up a while ago on a trip to Chicago. So far I am very impressed with Pipeworks output. The local market is a tough one in which to carve a niche but they are doing it. Those of you who get to try their stuff fresh and on draft are lucky. Personally I cannot wait for them to shake up the GTMW (hopefully with no line).
Aroma / Appearance - The fluid reddish black base had a fringe of ochre head. Smoke, rye, and corned beef are accompanied by this strong spicy aspect. It’s not overwhelming but it smells like eating a well crafted reuben at Manny’s while inhaling light cigarette smoke.
Flavor / Palate - Smoke and rye stand out at first. Soon though a meaty transition smokes the back of the throat. Like a mouthful of liquid pastrami it hangs on the tongue. A soft carbonated finish is like a grocery store brand cola. This is a fine change of pace from the usual and a great reward for the adventurous.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of kanin1805. Pours a deep red with a slight haze and a creamy beige head. Spicy nose - cinnamon and cloves sticking out? Rich body, soft carbonation, subtle roast, ashy smoke - peat - with the spices chiming in a little late. A slight pepper bite. Some warming alcohol. A beer that wants to do too many things at once.... 030413
