Rye Barleywine Style Ale. The unicorn may have finally found its match in Death Incarnate. But hold your horned horses, because the unicorn lives to rye another day! What a sickle joke! But, we aren’t tricking you, this barley wine is a real treat, with a rich malt skeleton and a more than paranormal amount of hops. If you’re going to harvest soul-y one beer this season, don’t fear the reaper...

22oz bottle. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is of hops, rye, sugar, and caramel. Smells nice and boozy. Taste is of taste is big on the rye. Very sugary with a fair amount of caramel. There is also a grassy hop character to it as well. Very sticky and sugary mouthfeel. Lingering caramel and grassy flavors. The alcohol is well masked. A very tasty beer.

Bottle thanks to Sarah! Pours a clear deep amber with a tan head that lasts throughout the beer and laces slightly. Aroma has a really nice rye note that is complimented by toffee and a bit of a grassiness. Flavor has a nice rye and grass combination with a bit of sweetness from grains underlying.

2014 batch. Cloudy dark brown pour. Lots of caramel, toffee, almost a scotch ale malt backbone. Then on top lots of the pipeworks citrusy hops you would expect from their double IPAs. For me a barleywine has to be either barrel aged or heavily hopped. This ticks the second box nicely, and does it a bit differently than the standard blonde hoppy barleywine. This is pretty good.

22oz bottle in a tulip. Pours deep, cloudy brown with a lacy, beige head. Aroma of lots of caramel and toffee and some nutty malts, light rye spiciness, hints of alcohol, and some floral and bitter hops. Flavor the same with a decent blend, but sort of weird, with the bitterness and alcohol and rye taking away from the traditional barley wine. Smoother texture. A decent beer.

65 cl bottle @ Timo A. Thanks lusikka! No freshness info.
Pours dark copper color with a small head. Lots of hops on the nose, some caramel malts, grape fruits, some malty bone is there also. Lots of hops on the flavor also, resin, mild caramel malts and some grape fruits. More like and DIPA or American Strong Ale at this hop stage, might turn out as a Barley Wine later. Very tasty and aggressive anyway, seems very fresh.

650 ml bottle with a small head. Thanks lusikka. Pours a dark brown colour with a small head. Rich aroma of caramel, floral notes, grapefruit and grass. Flavour of rich grapefruity bitterness, heavy caramel, pine, some resin, biscuit and herbs. Full bodied and thick mouthfeel. Very long, lingering bitter, heavy finish. A heavy strong ale with nice hoppiness. At this point I would not call this as a barleywine, but more of an American strong ale.

Bottle shared by Joris at his place, many thanks! Beautiful deep amber-red pour with creamy off white foam. Aroma is quite rich and malty, nice english barleywine character, rich toasted and caramel notes, light leafy hoppiness. Taste is sweet, a bit too boozy but at least it doesn’t feel like a million IBU’s amercian BW style, rich caramel malty notes, figs, nice grassy hoppiness. Palate is full, a little too sweet, med carbonation. Good american barleywine.

Poured from 22oz bomber I've had for awhile. Dark almost brown color with a tiny layer of off white head. Plum and fruit aroma. Taste is cherry plum pine and a very sweet after taste. Somewhat bitter. Not bad for this style.

Dark brown colour with a frothy and creamy off white head with good duration and very nice lacework. Aroma has notes of caramel, very malty, sweet sensation and ripe red fruit. Flavor has notes of caramel, barley, rye, notes of toffee and ripe red fruit with a sweet mouthfeel at the beginning and more bittery in the final. Creamy and smooth on palate with a medium alcoholic mouthfeel.
