4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Location: 22 oz bottle from Eataly - Chicago, 8/21/14
Aroma: The nose is resiny hops over sweet caramel/toffee malts, with grapefruit hop notes
Appearance: It pours a hazy reddish-orange/brown with a thick, frothy beige head and good lacing
Flavor: Tastes quite balanced, with the sweet malts bleeding seamlessly in the hop bitterness
Palate: The body is medium-full, very smooth and easy drinking, with a clean, dry finish
This one poured beautifully into my boat beer glass. The frothy head rest nicely on top of the beer. A great first impression. The nose and flavor pick up right where the pour left off, with an excellent mix of sweet malt and bitter hop components. This is impressively balanced from a flavor profile perspective, and also incredibly easy drinking for a 9% beer. This is an excellent Imperial Red, right up there with some of my favorites in the "style," I would happily drink this again.

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber from Binny’s in Buffalo Grove, batch #431-434, so about 2 months since batch date. Happy to have a Pipeworks - one of my favorite breweries, that I need to be down in CHI-town to find - with an American Strong - one of my favorite styles - be my 1200th rating. Pours orangey amber (ice tea look) with a very slight head leaving almost no lace. Nice head with some swirling. Aroma has heavy pine and citrus, with stone fruits and caramel. A nice solid hop-forward "American Strong" (aka, from Arrogant Bastard!) odor! Taste is of sweet fruits and malts, tangy pine, grapefruit, lemons, alcohol, some caramel, and some nuts. Medium bodied, syrupy, and quite sweet. Finishes sweet and bitter, with a lot of tangy-ness, and length. This became a bit cloying near the bottom of the bottle from the sweetness. The bitterness and fruitiness fought and fought, as they were strong, but the sweetness just overwhelmed. Makes one wonder if 6 months of aging would tamper the hops a bit and smooth it out ... or if the sweetness of the malts would still overtake the rest without the hops as involved. 14.4

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pous copper amber with a small light beige head. Aroma is sweet hoppy malts with some oranges and pine resin. Flavor brings delicious sweet and delicately zesty oranges with a smooth malty undertone they complements the hops so well on a full bit balanced body.

Poured from 22oz bottle at club wakonda. Dark red pour with lacy bubbly white head. Malty grain aroma. The taste is fruity and hoppy like an IPA with red beer traits. Good beer

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a nice red rust color with a soapy sheet of light tans. Smells of sharp hops (reminds me of a butt load of columbus), some gingerbread dough folded with warm butter, some sugar, maybe a hint of booze. Flavor is like a tasty malty shake with some bitterness and a bit of vanilla. I’m surprised at the deviation from the nose that the flavor takes, but it’s welcome. Thin bodied with lower carb and and off dry finish, this doesn’t meet my expectations of a red - fuller with fleeting, sharp carb and a nice dry finish. Not a bad beer, some folks might hate to hear this, but with a litter Special B malt and some time, this has the potential to be really, really good beer. I like it.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bomber bought for $10 at The Beer Temple in Chicago. Batch #161, bottled 7/2/13. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint.
Appearance: Pours a deep red/brown color that is hazy as hell (with a few random chunks) with tiny bubbles that form a creamy, two finger, tan head. Lacing is great.
Smell: Tons of hops... really, a ton of them. I can also pick up on some sort of malt sweetness, but this definitely has a ton of hops. There’s also a sort of citrus and citrus rind smell in this beer as well.
Taste/feel: Some sort of peach and maybe mango flavors hit the tongue first, for me. After that, that distinctive, piney hop flavor comes through with a moment of cotton candy sweetness. On the finish, there’s a fairly large spicy hop and malt presence that I thought would be throughout each sip, given that it’s supposedly an Amber/Red. There’s a slight afterburn and warmth in the throat on the swallow to suggest the amount of alcohol, but it’s not in the aroma or flavor at all. The feel is extremely silky, but almost too much so -- smooth as hell, and drinks like it’s been nitro’d. I tend to only like my porters/stouts to have such a character, but it works pretty well here.
I really enjoy this beer, but it’s not *quite* what I was expecting. This drinks like a red IPA rather than an amber. I don’t really mind that at all, but people should know that this is absolutely loaded with hops before going in. Very tasty. I’m impressed.
