3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Iím a little conflicted about this one, because of its unusual appearance and palate, but man is it a very tasty barleywine!
So the issue is this is truly way out there on the barleywine end of the spectrum. . . to the point that itís nearly flat, in terms of carbonation. Traditional, but I prefer a little more bubble (outside the cask).
Nose is unremarkable, but the color gives you a hint something is unusual here, as itís not just the usual carmely hue, but a bit of a blazing (bloody?) red to it.
But man that flavor. So cool to get the unicorn hop vibe, along with all of its raging bitter profile, wrapped around a syrupy, roasty barleywine.
Tastey tastey stuff. . . might make you wince a bit when you first taste, but as the flavors play out of the next couple minutes, going all the way from blazing lemony bitters to rich sweet leathery carmel. . . sigh. . .

from Erzbierschof - murky dark red-amber beer with a moderate foam left; aroma of caramel and prunes; full-bodied and pretty sweet, light thick; some decent bitterness and a long toffeish aftertaste with more notes of red fruits and some residual sweetness

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
22oz bomber shared by Ben. Hazy unfiltered orange-burgundy. Rich malts, and a big piny resinous hop bite. Citrus edged. Pretty drinkable for the ABV. Really pronounced hop bite. Cooling hop finish perfectly balances the big malts.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A- pours a turbid apple cider brown with honey colored edges. Solid finger of light tan head and great lacing. S- aromas are more nuanced than other pipeworks barley wines. Caramel, apple candies, and toffee are still strong, but some coffee grounds, pine, dirt and citrus pith create a balanced entry. Various hop notes are mixed in, like grapefruit, grass and soap with some lively wet zinc dancing in the back of the nose. M- chewy and lightly gritty medium body. Decent carb. T- dirty, dry start with some overripe apples, caramel and toffee. Cinnamon and nutmeg spices follow. Hop notes, coriander, grape seed, orange and grapefruit introduced towards the middle. Ending is sharper with some bitter grasses, celery, soap and pepper. Minerals too. Nice take on the style and alcohol is well hidden and lacks a heavy burn.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bomber pours a murky brown with a small khaki head. Aroma of caramel and toffee. Creamy chewy texture, heavy caramel and toffee flavors, alcohol and some lingering hop bitterness on the finish. Yep, that a barley wine thatís been on the shelf awhile, not bad as far as those go

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
5th April 2014
Almost opaque dark red - brown beer, small pale tan head. Palate is mildly crisp, minerals. Rich toffee malt with a dark toffee streak. Light malt cream. Salty hops, pine and spice and a touch of ripe orange. Whispers of marmalade and red berry fruits. Finishes light with a carbonated bite. Very nice US style barleywine.
