The assassin of the east may have drawn first blood, but the mythical horned beast is back for UNICORNíS REVENGE. Grazing on fruity and floral New Zealand hops, this vindictive double IPA drives a horn through straight through the heart of any Ninja brazen enough to stand in the way of its peerless flavor. Behold! Beyond the piles of lifeless Ninja bodies a rainbow will rise, and on its breast, this rampaging beast of a beer will have its revenge!

Bomber batch 551-552. Pours a murky amber with decent mocha head. Nice lacing left throughout. Has a butterscotch, toffee, caramel, and floral aroma. Mildly sweet taste that finished slightly bitter. Flavors of raisins, prunes, caramel, and tropical fruits. Medium body that was oily and slick on the palate. Overall a solid DIPA from pipeworks.

Bottle; Pour is murky mahogany with a soft, one fingered khaki head into this glass - it retains fairly well, with sticky lacing presence. The New Zealand hops explained a lot after I read the writeup - but on to that. The nose dank florals, feint butterscotch, moving to sweet bread and caramel notes here. The flavor profile is initial heavy bittering hops , and it moves to a slight astringent note and ultimately fades in the center to a certain level of mediocrity - its dry, light sweet, with more floral hop notes and tropicals. It finishes somewhat fruity with a spicy finish line. Well - the bottle art is the most appealing element to this beer.

My Bottom Line:
This muddled Double IPA manages to share buttery Chardonnay notes within an otherwise vegetal hop presence, as alcohol heat and yeast surge in the back.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the murky pale amber.
-The aroma was especially disappointing for the style.
-This is still a flavorful brew, but it is far from bright and engaging.
-This didnít exhibit the telltale signs of aging, other than having a brash, unrefined hop signature (straight crushed pellets) and loose sugars.
-There is no date on the bottle, but I refuse to believe this was close to being fresh. This cannot be the beer that is getting rave reviews.

Pours a nice caramel color. Smells of tropical fruits. Initial taste of butterscotch and pineapple with hops on the end. The first Pipeworks beer Iíve had. I look forward to more.

Rich amber/cider color; Medium creamy body; Aroma of caramel malt, toffee, floral hops, & fruit; Flavor of sweet malt, caramel/syrup, molasses, spicy hops, tropical fruit, and citrus; Warm finish & fairly bitter; More of a barley wine - but very nice.

apricotty start with a fruity sweet finish. super easy to drink for a 10% alcohol beer. smells like apricots and has a hoppy finish. pours reddish brown in color with a tan head. had out of a bomber at home.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2014 Dark, murky brown-yellow with a head of one finger. Aroma is tropical, warm, hint of caramel, some cracker, doughy. Taste is rich and full-bodied, if slightly odd; juicy fruit, lemongrass, biscuit along with a strong vegetal presence, savory herbs and a hint of blue cheese. Itís an odd IPA thatís sure to break up any hop fatigue you might have.

Odd, something you canít quite place, almost minty weirdness. Notes of Cat Pee...Ahhh, floral citrus. NZ hops. Resin on the tongue, sweetness and alcohol. Big, nice hoppy mess with Southern Hemisphere ingredients included. Could be tightened up.

Bottle: Thick pour... wow, looks nearly as thick as a barley wine. Opaque, dingy & swampy looking copper. Murky. Soft, off-white head is gone within moments, only a thin film remains. Aroma is over the top sweet, especially for a DIPA. Pungent grapefruit, orange, & some tropical fruits, glazed in sugar, caramel, & dipped in a toffee candy bath. Some brash pines all around. Underattenuated like a bitch, first sip is a mouth full of sweet grapefruit, grapes, & mango that have been soaking in caramel & brown sugar for hours. Very, very sweet, yet strangely very bitter in the finish. Quite staunch, the aftertaste pine needle attack on your tongue is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the early sweetness. Huge body, chewy. Chewy DIPA. Canít figure this beer out. It doesnít completely suck but we are on totally different wavelengths.

With Zach over homemade burritos, pour a burnt orange color , hazy with no real head. Nose is hoppy, bitter and overwhelmingly piney and resinous. Taste very bitter with strong pine and resin, alcohol with any citrus buried very deep. A bitter finish as well, with a very piney and long resinous finish. IBUs ? Nice, could bitter the sweetest of beer drinkers. Quaff Score 8 / 10
