Codythegreat (133), Carrollton, Georgia, USA Dec 4, 2007 Updated: Mar 29, 2008It was a pretty good Belgium Strong Ale but none is better than the Chimay Grande Reserve. Had a yellow colour with a white head and hoppy aroma and taste. I drank this out of a tumbler. Pwn3d (1036), Manhattan, New York, USA Dec 3, 2007 Almost no head. pours on the lighter side. banana spice taste with cloves and coriander. maybe some dried plums and dates. can taste the alcohol, but for 10.5% its pwnage darn1207 (528), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Dec 3, 2007 bottle from BJ’s brewery in Tampa -- citrus and a little spice, doughy, yeast and malt on the nose. Same flavors with plum, clove, dry fruity yeast finish. balanced body. green apple undertones. Good stuff - need to try again. hopscotch (5440), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Dec 2, 2007 Bottle... Hazy yellow ale with a huge, frothy, white head; diminishes to a small, tight, everlasting, creamy cap. The yeasty, pale malt nose offers notes of white bread, biscuit, fuzzy and tropical fruits... maybe mango, possibly papaya; definitely apricot with rumors of acidic funk and a clove phenol. Heavily sweet, fruity and hot... red hot. Every bit of that 10.5% ABV shines right on through. Medium bitter from hops and alcohol. Full-bodied with an almost creamy mouthfeel and prickly carbonation. Sweet, fruity, boozy finish. Opium-based, I think. This was one mind-altering 750 ml bottle! ;-) jobyone (234), Charlotte, USA Nov 26, 2007 Pours golden with large white head. Aroma is sweet with lots of fruit. The flavor has a definate alcohol presence along with some fruit sweetness. Nice bitterness to the finish. Bontus (291), Waasmunster, Belgium Nov 22, 2007 Updated: Oct 2, 2008Had bottles in Backdoor Café & Trollenkelder (both in Ghent). And lots more on all sorts of occasions. Also had a 75cl bottle once.
Very nice appearance, strong sticky and creamy head with a golden body.
Hints of caramel or honey and marzipan in its aroma. Not a fruity sweet flavor but rather a doughy sweet one. A typical quality strong ale.
edit:
Opened a +two year old 75cl bottle, it was very good, a bit more hazy and complex. (Rating #1352) sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Nov 20, 2007 draft at maproom. i wish i hadn’t lost my rating of this. i really liked it. it was pretty normal pale brown clear appearance with decent 1/2 inch head. smell was strong and of honeyed almonds with coriander. taste was brilliantly balanced, plenty of sweet honey front, balanced fruity hop back side. zero alcohol flavor really. i’ll find that note somewhere.
