jcp23 (47), Duluth, Georgia, USA May 23, 2009 Cool heavy weight 11.2 oz. bottle into trappist glass. Bready, yeasty, spicy aroma. Lovely, softly hazy, medium golden colour, with gloppy mounds of white foam, leaving some wispy lacing. Sharp malt taste, surrounded by notes of pear, clove, and slightly burnt toast. Rich, gooy mouthfeel that makes me smack my lips. The alcohol is noticeable in the warm feeling that has engulfed me, but its effortless quaffability belies the 10.5% hammer. Tiver me shimbers-arghh!. Piraats are your friends. xs2500 (90), Mississippi, USA May 20, 2009 Pours with a massive head that laces, flavor is complex. Hints of fruit, malts. Palates well, armoma is slightly sweet. Put this one on your list to try grikmok (92), Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA May 19, 2009 Poured into a chalice. Significant head and lace. Aromas of fruits and yeast. Initial taste of malts and ended with a bitter sweet taste. The body was just right. It is a memorable beer. yumyum (113), barrie, Ontario, Canada May 18, 2009 pours rich golden colour with significant white frothy head. Reminds me of a triple. Some slight fruitiness on the nose, taste was a mix of yeastiness with some slight pineapple sweetness. Was well balanced and reasonably easy drinking for 10.5%. Wouldn’t seek it out but would try again djd07 (721), Houston, Texas, USA May 14, 2009 Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy orange golden with a large frothy white head that lasts awhile leaving behind good sticky lacing. The aroma is a strong clove and spicy malts. Thick mouthfeel with a very bitter malt taste with clove pepper and a dry spicy finish. A good belgian strong ale from Brouwerij. yesyouam (587), Fairport, New York, USA May 13, 2009 Piraat Ale is hazy, bubbly and golden with a thick, fluffy, frothy, yellowed head that has great retention and lacing. It has an aroma of bread, pepper, clove and bubblegum. It has a smooth and fluffy medium body with a clean finish. There are notes of leather and black pepper in the flavor. The alcohol is quite prominent. There really doesn’t seem to be much bitterness or sweetness. Other flavors slowly reveal themselves, notably pear. The flavors are well blended and well balanced, but the alcohol flavor is a little distracting.
nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA May 12, 2009 Are these the guys that issued a "cease and desist" to AleSmith over "irie pirate ale?" If so, lots of bad beer karma to them! Still though this Belgian ale is not too shabby. Golden color with a little haze and a white head. Aroma of pale malt, light fruits, spices, and yeast. Flavor is malt, Candi sugar, pineapple, mango, and mild hops on the finish. Smooth palate with medium body. FrankJohansen (3329), Sabro, Denmark May 11, 2009 Bottle. Hazy golden colour with a huge fully lasting white head. Complex aroma and taste of malts, fruits and spices. Well balanced. Long finish.
