Nice carbonation level. Sourness, bitterness and tartness seem to be interwoven nicely. Earthy and woody malts, with just a hint of smoke. Only a pinch of sweetness tries to rear its little head. While not overly complex, it still had some peculiar flavors that kept me guessing. Mild fruitiness and bitterness seemed to round things out nicely. Overall, not overly exciting, but maybe worth an eyebrow raise. maniac (2774), Richmond, Virginia, USA

This was a very sweet beer with a light bitter aftertaste. DruncanVeasey (2770), The Penguin’s Arms, Europe, Warwickshire, England
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Mar 13, 2007 Spritzy apricot pour developing an impressively rocky head of froth. Moderate haze. A pleasing noseful of sour banana-pineapple-pickled onion fruitiness. Bizarre and appetising. Unmalted barley, overripe boozy fruit and punchy hop dryness. A sniff of mellow bready wheatiness in the afternose. Well-rounded Strong Ale. michael-pollack (2763), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 30, 2008 330ml Bottle: Aroma of hops, light alcohol, yeast, slight sour apples, sweet malts, light herbs, light grass, slight pepper, and a hint of funk. Poured golden/amber in color with a medium to large-sized, rocky, white head that lasted throughout. Clear. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is light to medium sweet. Tastes of fruit, nectar, yeast, hops, slight resin, light herbs, malts, and light grass. Medium body. Slick, oily texture. Average carbonation. Sweet, fruity, yeasty finish is a tad dry. 10.5%ABV is completely hidden. Beershine (2754), Traipsing Around, China
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Oct 27, 2007 like Duvel, Piraat can become a table beer as it is widely available. Not all beers have to have a bombardment of flavor, which is not often desirable anyway. Pirat is unpretentious, has a nice grainy character but remains dry and strong. A really approachable beer that often hits the spot. Nuffield (2749), Roseville, Minnesota, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 4, 2003 Golden color, with much less white head than other beers by the brewery. Sweetness up front, and good basic flavors, though one vein of metallic flavors struck me uncomfortably. Some spiciness--much better flavor balance when it was warmer. Good palate all around, full of life and full in the mouth. harlequinn (2745), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Jul 2, 2003 Full of flavor and aromatic surprises. Medium bodied and complex, spicy and tangy with very little achohol taste considering it is 10.5%. I just found myself wishing it came in a bigger bottle.
