Piraat is a wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze. Lots of hops and malt. Mild sweetness. Reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.

A: Poured with an average-sized head that is white and bubbly. Body is a dark orange, and extremely clear with just the slightest evidence of haze. S: Lots of yeast and bread coming through here. The aroma also has a fruitiness to it that is quite pleasant. T: Sweet, fruity, and yeast, with a very slight twinge of bitterness in there as well. The finish is dry, with a slight alcohol warmth as well. M: Medium-bodied, creamy, with average carbonation. D: A very good beer, but I don’t know if I would have recognized it as a Belgian IPA; mind you, I’ve never had this style before, and I would expect their IPAs to be less in-your-face then many in North America.

Clean amber. Frothy large head with high retention. Aroma intensity 3/5. Blackcurrant, banana and a bit of pepper in the nose. Medium bitter with some sweet in the back of the mouth. Pepper is more evident in the taste. Medium to full body

Bronze with full lasting head. Aroma of malt and some pineapple. Creamy and fairly carbonated. Sweet malt with some caramel and fruitiness. Yeast apparent in the mouthfeel. Alcohol is detectable. Definitely my cup of tea.

Pours hazy golden/light amber with a big foamy head that leaves lacing. The aroma contains different fruits, spices, sugar, yeast and dough. Medium sweet towards a light, not too dry bitterness. Medium in body, lively carbonation and thick texture. A big punch of alcohol for the lovers. Great, a classic.

330ml pour from room-temp bottle in Kazakhstan. Pours a deep orange, clear, very heavily carbonated, large bubbly fluffy off-white head. Nose is sweet and fruity, citrus (orange and lemon), floral, maybe honey, some biscuit, and some dough. Body is medium-full, creamy up front with a dry sticky finish. Taste carries a lot of that in the nose, with some baking spices and more fruitiness added in. I don’t get as much of the bready/doughy notes in the taste though. Alcohol is notable, but not overpowering. Warming.

33cl bottle at home (16 I 2016). I had this beer on numerous occasions: At home, at beer festivals, at the brewery, in my neighbourhood. Now let’s have a closer look at this classic Van Steenberge brew. I would give this look a 4.5 score on appearance. The collar is so creamy thick and white, like whipped cream. It really lovely tops the amber, to brown brew. The flavours are full of Belgian yeasts, some dirt and earth, bread dough too. The taste is a bit more balanced, with some citrus hints, nicely hopped bitterness and a warming spirit-like sensation. The earthy, yeast notes are not my thing. The sweetness is not as heavy as I remembered, which is a good thing. There is some honey in the ending. Alas, the fruity lemon and oranges features are missing too - the colour is less golden, I strongly believe. Perhaps the recipe has changed over time. This Pirate beer, a Van Steenberge brew I prefer over the Augustijn beer series, is an archetype Belgian strong ale. Pretty good balanced, pretty medium quality. Undoubtedly a classic ale.
