It has an equally exquisite taste as Piraat but combined with the finest hops.

From a package of the Lidl. Amber, minimal head., flat beer. Aroma is sweet, some fizzling in the mouth, with minimal citrus, some artificial aroma even. Sweetish taste, alcoholic, medium body, reasonable finish. Not so good at all.

On Tap at "The Yard". Another Belgian beer that I liked. Nothing particularly remarkable about it but it was enjoyable to drink. It was fairly smooth with a slight burn on the end due to the high alcohol content. No fancy flavors to hide the alcohol. Not my first choice but I’d drink it again.

33cl stubby into a tulip glass. Pours a hazy yellow/amber, with a dense medium white head. Nose is apple and pears, and the taste follows the nose, with a bit of malt sweetness. Slight hop character on the finish, which is smooth and long, tasting of alcohol. Not as hoppy as I feared. Nice beer, but nothing special.

Another example of a family brewery exploiting the "hops forward" movement which has reached Belgium in the past five to ten years - not thanks to the established family breweries, but thanks to the innovative micro breweries. Anyway, this is nothing more than Piraat 10.5° with three hop varieties, so a "tripel hop" and therefore in debt to Duvel Tripel Hop. Sticky and relatively thick, egg-white, dense, regular head over an orangey amber coloured beer, clear with strong fizz, small champagne-like bubbles everywhere, clouded with deposit. Aroma has that typical bitterish Van Steenberge yeast profile, impressions of cake, candied cherry, canned apricot, white bread, orange juice, white rhum, baked banana, strong iron presence, cigarette tobacco and grassy, somewhat dull hops. Estery and sweetish onset, white candi sugar, sourish lemon peel touch giving some refreshment, a very faint salty accent, minerally and metallic, over a caramelly and slightly nutty, soft malt sweetness; from the middle onwards the palate is dominated not so much by ’triple’ hoppiness as I had hoped, but rather by astringent, ’jenever’-like alcohol drying the mouth. In the end, you are left with an unpleasant alcohol burn rather than a gentle alcohol warmth, spicy and bready yeastiness and lingering malt sweetness, through which a quite ’ordinary’, leafy, grassy hop bitterness pierces. This is far from a Belgian IPA - if that was the intention, this is a clear failure, but then I wouldn’t be surprised if Van Steenberge does not even know what a true double IPA tastes like. Though still acceptable, I find this beer effectively redundant, in being less different from Piraat 10.5° than I had hoped.

Aroma of sweet malt, ripe fruits, spicy yeast, light hops. Flavour is medium to heavy sweet with a moderate bitter finish. A bit disappointing.

Stubby 33cl brown bottle of Privateer. Poured amber; slightly hazy; very large and durable bone-colored head; bands of sticky lacing. A full pour still left some dark brown sediment in the bottle. Very appealing aroma with brown bread, ripe fruits and a hint of toffee. The flavor follows largely, with intensity building through the finish and into the aftertaste. Very good sweet/bitter balance with an overall slightly sweet character. High ABV is well hidden in the nose, but only partly hidden in the feel and upon tasting. Nice hints of raisins and brandied dates, along with some hop notes, in the aftertaste. Tastes considerably darker than it actually looks. O: less well known than Piraat but worth seeking out.

Growler shared with the old man. Pours hazy golden with a big fluffy white head. Aroma of sweet pears, some apple, yeast funk, slightly dusty, with some fruity and grassy hop character. Flavor follows with lightly sweet pear, some light hop bite, yeasties, basically like regular Piraat with a slight but more bite. Medium bodied with medium plus carbonation. Overall pretty solid. What’s with the low score here? Pretty much just like the regular version but a bit lighter on the palate with the hop additions.

Super sour along with quite sweet, heavily carbonated and, yes, there are hops, but they’re not particularly fresh tasting. I’m not a fan. This isn’t bad stuff, it’s just not for me.

330. Pours a slightly hazy medium gold with a loose and filmy off white head. Big sticky sweet vegetal nose, like candied artichoke hearts. Fizzy medium body. Artichokes, boiled marjoram, and palm sugar on the mid palate. Long vegetal dryish finish.
