Pivo is Bulgarian for beer, and Pirinsko Pivo is a classic Bulgarian pilsner beer. Since 1971, it has been made with spring water from the nearby Pirin Mountain that not only provides the pure taste but also lends its name to the beer.

Had a 500 ml bottle of this lager at a few restaurants and pubs in Bulgaria. They seem to have redesigned the bottle and label, as compared to the ones on the picture. While it is light and OK for the summer, there is nothing distinctive about this beer. Clear, light gold colour with medium to high carbonation and medium, white head. Tastes light and water-y with a very slight note of bitterness.

Quite refreshing taste. Maltiness taste, a bit of hop and some grainy cereals. Well carbonated, malty and hoppy aftertaste. Solid beer.

Can. Certainly the best Bulgarian macrolager I’ve had so far, with a pleasant, soft pale maltiness that is quite bready. Not much of a bitterness to be found in here but treating it as a less sweet helles does it certainly justice.

Can from Kaya Food Store, Nottingham. Completely different design to that shown but appears to be the same thing. Standard dull looking pale lager with a standard dull watery taste. Besides a slight hint of skunky malt there’s really no noticeable taste or finish here at all.

Head: white, medium, frothy, avg. retention. Colour: yellow and clear. Aroma: faint hops, malt, grain. Taste: malt, weak hops, bit sour, crisp and clear. A typical eurolager.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Ariel’s place. Thanks eyes_wide_shut. Pours bright yellow with lively carbonation and a small head, aroma of acids, cereals and milk, flavors of mushrooms and malt, light bodied
