An array of dark malts and a heaping dose of cocoa nibs* from French Broad Chocolate Lounge make this chocolate stout an instant classic. Aged on nibs for a number of weeks, this beer displays the gentle alchemy of chocolate and malted barley. *Broken pieces of the cocoa bean. FBCL’s chocolate maker hand-sorted, roasted, cracked, & winnowed beans from the La Red Guaconejo cooperative of the Dominican Republic.

Botal, from Bruisin Ales, Asheville. Good aroma sweet. Chocolate, oatmeal, little old milk smell, not sour, but not fresh. Dark orangey brown color, good initial head, faded to a ring, little to no lace. Sweet flavor. Heavy body, creamy mouthfeel, sweet dry finish. Nice, not wowing me, but fine. Flavor best part for me, due to slight old milk scent I got.

Black with a dark reddish-brown edge when held to the light. More than a finger of creamy foam head. The aroma is outstanding. Smells like baking chocolate or sticking your nose in a can of cocoa powder. Hints of espresso and cream underneath the overwhelmingly chocolate impression. Flavor is very similar to the nose, with bitter chocolate and cacao nib character dominating. Medium-full bodied with balanced bitterness and no astringency. The chocolate flavor even lingers on the palate for a super long finish. One of the most chocolatey beers I’ve tried that still tastes like great beer. None of that tootsie-roll or hershey’s syrup-like fake chocolate flavor here!

Draft at the brewery. Brewvival Trip Beer 16. Pours a dark brown color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention. Aroma of roasted malts, chocolate, mild tartness. The taste is roasted malts, coffee and a cocoa finish. Medium bodied, refreshing.

Tap at the Thirsty Monk. Black, brown head. Actually smells more coffee-ish than chocolatey, but there is plenty of chocolate, too Taste is also more coffee forward, with lots of dark chocolate in the background. Dry-ish finish.
