Bottle… Murky, caramel-colored ale with a small, creamy, off-white head and thousands of small, white floaties tooling about the glass. Good retention. Cereal grain, corn and caramel are dominant in the nose. Full-bodied with a watery mouthfeel and energetic carbonation. Caramel and lightly vinous notes. Dark fruit, thin finish. Kudos to mgumby10 for popping the top on this one!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On draught at Barleys, Asheville on 7 July 2006 (at 9.5%). Dark copper colour. Sweet as hell with lots of hops. There’s a big, rich treacle character. Also orange peel and chocolate orange. Some spices and fruit cake too. Full, rich mouthfeel. Hardly subtle - I guess it’s not meant to be - but very interesting and packed with flavour, if maybe a little too rich and sticky to retain drinkability. Nice to sip and savour though.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750ml bottle: Pours a transparent amber ruby with a wispy-lacing froth of off-white head. Aroma of sweet caramel malt and fresh grapefruity hops with a touch of alcohol. Starts fairly full and sweet with an earthy resiny piny bittering and flavor hop balance toward a drier bittersweet finish. Pretty well-balanced and crisp. This should age pretty well.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 18/20
22 ounce bottle from Greenlife Grocery in Asheville, purchased in March 2010 and opened 10/12/10. I was doing a bunch of admin work on NC beers, so I needed to crack one. This one pours a clear ruby red color with a medium tan creamy head. Good head retention and decent lacing. Toffee aroma with notes of berries, spices, hops and brown sugar. The taste is toffee, brown sugar, bitter citrus hops, plums, faint spicy notes and a faint bit of roastiness. Medium-full bodied. Good beer. I’m a sucker for brown sugar, which they add to this, so I’m digging this one quite a lot.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
2008 (I think) 750mL bottle. Poured a lovely shade of clear garnet with a creamy, sticky, well-retained beige head. The aroma was on the sweet side with aged darker fruits, vinous notes, and molasses leading.. almost syrupy, with a hint of aspartame on the back.. the sweetness did mask the warmth well. The flavor found a lot of sugars at the core, with molasses, green grapes, and English toffee at the forefront.. not much bitterness to note, but apparent degradation hinted that there was some a year or two ago.. warmth rode out the finish over a grainy bed of fruit and toffee sugars.. an odd sharper bitterness popped up right at the very end, knocking it down a notch of enjoyment. Medium-bodied with rolling carbonation fighting with the sharp stuff at times.. thick and almost chewy over the last fifth or so, making it a little hard to get down.. warmed up the belly.. not bad.
