3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. bottle. Deep reddish amber with a large off white head. Caramel and fruit aromas predominate, with a backdrop of hoppiness. Smooth, medium body and carbonation, a bit sticky. Tends toward sweetness with plenty of malt flavors, but sufficient hop balance to round out the finish. Pretty decent, a solid offering from this Western NC brewer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: APR 7, 2009 Thanks to JCB for the 750ml bottle. Probably about 8 months old. Clear orange/copper with a large head. Aroma of caramel, brown sugar and toffee; maybe a little floral hops and dark fruit, but the star of this show is all the sugar. Fairly sweet, alcohol is well covered. Medium mouthfeel. I probably should have cracked this sooner to get the full hops effect.

Tasting at Butters 6th cellar reduction. Brown sugar and alcohol. 2nd Barrios notes. Wish the spice notes came through a bit more. Little too much sugar here. Still smooth and easy to drink. Pretty tasty.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle courtesy of tpd975. Pours amber with a large light tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, caramel, dark fruit, and floral hops. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 bottle caged and corked. Pours and medium dirty brown color with fast leaving white head as it warms. To be honest, this is not a good looking brew, lots of suspended yeast floaties. Aroma of ripe fruit, malt, light brown sugar, and mango. The taste was the same with fizzy lively carbonation. Good sweetness in the finish. Decent light and easy drinking BW. Different but good. Glad I have more to lay down.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle dated April ’08. Opaque ruby pour with a dense white head and good lace. Rich dark fruit aroma with molasses, sharp pine and wet oak. The flavor follows through from the aroma with a sweet honey finish. Sticky, medium-full body with soft carbonation.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bomber, thanks to sevenhokie. Rich caramel malt and dark fruit aroma with brown sugar and some hops. Pours dark ruby red with one finger of white head with good retention and lacing. Nice caramel malt and dark fruit flavors with subtle brown sugar sweetness. Finishes quite smooth with a hint of hop bitterness and just a touch of booze. Nice barleywine.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aroma: Citrus, brown sugar, floral hints, alcohol
Appearance: Dark reddish/brown with small off-white head
Taste: Sweet, a bit syrupy.
Palate: Warm alcohol up front, lively alcohol laden mouthfeel. Chewy, although a thinner mouthfeel than I might expect.
Overall: Smooth, tasty sipper in the likes of bigfoot. This is a big beer that doesn’t try to hide the alcohol. No off-notes or unpleasant flavors, making this quite pleasing to drink

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours the color of maple syrup with a nice sized white head. This flavors and nose make it clear this is English-style...very sweet, a bit sticky, and a low to medium level of carbonation. It’s a bit hot and could probably use some age to mellow out as this was a fresh bottle. I typically like a more hopped up American version of a barleywine and this one would be better with age, but for a fresh, sweet Barleywine, it is quite good.
