Pours a ruby color with a tan head. Aroma is caramel, astringent, and citrus hops. Flavor is malty, caramel, fruity, astringent, with a bitter woody earthy finish.

12 oz serving at the brewery. This is a fine barleywine that feels and tastes like it has a bit of aging. Not much head to cover the clear copper body. High ABV fairly well hidden. Recommended.

UPDATED: AUG 10, 2008 Pours a dark maroon, with a small off white head. Smells of some light bready yeast, lightly sweet dark fruits, and caramel malt. The flavor has a bit of that bready yeast complex to it, with the caramel malt becoming a prominent figure in this beers identity. The finish is fairly malty with good doses of bitterness attacking the leavings on the palate. Decent little mix of dark fruit is left in the aftertaste. Not bad, but didnt blow me away.

Pours dark caramel color with no head. Nose and flavor go as bit oxidized, but brown sugar and caramel also persist. Medium to full mouthfeel.

750 ml bottle @ liquid sunshine tasting - thanks to riversideak; clear, light amber with big tan head; no carbonation in body though; aromas of mainly sugar and alcohol; lots of texture and a earthy feel to it; dry and sweet finish

Courtesy mgumby10. Cloudy brown color, thin, even layer of light tan head. Moderately sweet caramel and earthy hop aroma, odd citric notes in the background. Real low-key taste compared to the aroma - nice balance of earthy hops and sweetness, very little alcohol heat and not overly sweet. Above average BW.

2010 Bottle - Thanks JohnGalt1!! - Pours a clear copper with a small lt orange head...aroma is sweet and grainy, cherry, citrus peel and hops, caramel...flavour is similar, sweet brown sugar, alcohol, resiny bitterness and burnt sugar...seems a bit messy and doesn’t really come together like I hoped, but good to try...

Thanks to joey for this "gem". Also serious thanks to I do believe KP for bonusing thing brew! brown/red pour with a thin off white head. brow sugar and earth aroma. flavor is more sugar...compost, earth, caramel, booze. Good amount of carbonation in the finish. Just not my thing.

22 oz. bottle from Appalachian Vintner in Asheville. Dark amber colored pour with a thin off-white head. Delicious aroma; notes of whiskey, wood, vanilla, and oranges. The flavor is a bit on the sweet side, however. Sugary sweet brown sugar, maple syrup, and a touch of citrus. The mouthfeel is right where it should be for a barley wine of this ABV. It’s too bad the taste did not match the aroma but this is still a good barley wine.

Corked 750. After a bit of effort, the cork comes out with a loud high pitched pop. Pours a deep red with a huge off-white head. Absolutely one of the prettier beers you’ll see. Actually looks sort of like a belgian with that huge head. Some brown sugar and caramel in the aroma. Maybe a hint of plum. The flavor is slightly woody and very dry. I feel like this beer is instantly vaporizing the saliva from my mouth. I had to strain to pick up a little bit of late molasses at the finish. There is almost no alcohol presence. I don’t know why, but the more I drink this the more it reminds me of a good strong Belgian ale and not a Barley Wine at all.
