08 750ml corked and caged via TheBeerSommilier. After staring into my cellar like a zombie, I chose to open this, because I needed a big beer and I wanted a new rating and they came together in the form of hellbender. Drank from one of my reidel snifters. Pours rich orange with a creamy tan head. Nose is sweet and rich and smells pretty damn nice now with some hops in there too. Taste is hoppy, sweet and rich with a prickly mouth feel and a slight back end warming. I gotta say this hits the spot.

Metro Tasting. Poured a cloudy orange brown. Aroma is tangerine, dark fruits and sweet malt. Taste is caramel, orange, earthy dry hops, with a bitter finish. This was alright.

bottle. above average tan fizzy head (some lasting) into cloudy brown body with almost no lacing present. aromas of ripe fruit, brown sugar, hops, alcohol, and some vinousness. flavor is a subdued light bitter sweet throughout. above average carbonation. short to moderate finish duration. moderate texture. not as big or powerfull as expected but still quite enjoyable.

Thanks to MGumby10 for this one. Chunky brown caramel pour with a thin white head. Lots of caramel and brown sugar aroma. Big bold caramel malt, spicy hops. Slightly hot finish, but very tasty.

Pours dark caramel color with no head. Nose and flavor go as bit oxidized, but brown sugar and caramel also persist. Medium to full mouthfeel.

UPDATED: JAN 19, 2009 Tried again recently. A nicely done brew that I found a little smoother, but maybe that was due to age. Noogfest ’08. The body was hazy dark copper with a khaki head. The aroma was caramel with some sweet donuts. There was also some pear. The taste was pears with some cinnamon. A nice spicy finish.

bottle, from brewery. Good aroma, sweet. malty, chocolate, caramel, fruity, orange, fig/date, little berry, little orange, little leather, little candied sugar. Clean dark orange color, Big Head, good lace. Bittersweet flavor, doesn’t have quite as much as aroma. caramel, candied sugar, berries stand out to me, Medium body, oily creamy mouth feel, bitter dry finish. Good brew, was still a little on the hot side with the ABV and could of sat a while longer, IMO. Aroma, was good for a lot of little nuances as it warmed.

On draught at Barleys, Asheville on 7 July 2006 (at 9.5%). Dark copper colour. Sweet as hell with lots of hops. There’s a big, rich treacle character. Also orange peel and chocolate orange. Some spices and fruit cake too. Full, rich mouthfeel. Hardly subtle - I guess it’s not meant to be - but very interesting and packed with flavour, if maybe a little too rich and sticky to retain drinkability. Nice to sip and savour though.

Draft at the brewery. It has a slightly cloudy orange appearance with a thin layer of white head. Hugely hoppy aroma with note of grapefruite. Big flavor of hops, tasty.

thanks to bitbucket tasting. Hazy brown w/ medium head. Lightly sweet caramel malts and more citrus hops than expected. Very solid.
