COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The much awaited release of Pisgah's Vortex series has begun. The first offering is a triple IPA weighing in @ 10.8% and 133 IBU. This beer is packed with Chinook and Nugget hops throughout the boil. The refined bitterness within is the trademark our use of whole hop flowers and the aroma is due to 1# of dry hops per barrel for a number of loving weeks. Treat youself with caution!

Poured into a snifter. 3.5 A: Cloudy deep amber/mahogany color. One finger of creamy beige head with below average retention and moderate amounts of lacing. 4.0 S: I think this is supposed to be a DIPA, but itís listed as an American Strong, which is exactly what it smells like (or perhaps an American Barleywine). The strongest aromas is caramel and there is a lot of it. Next, there are orange and pine hops. The non-crystal malts come off as bready with some yeastiness in there as well. 3.5 T: Taste pretty much puts this beer into American Barleywine territory. Thereís a healthy bitter backbone in this, but not a whole lot of hop flavor. This is reminiscent of fresh Old Ruffian. Anyway, plenty of caramel with biscuity malts to accompany. Hops are again dominantly piney with orange, tangerine, and grapefruit. 3.5 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Could be creamier. 3.5 D: This is an okay beer, but it fails to deliver what it promises. It just isnít that hoppy in terms of hop flavor. Thatís not much of a problem, but it also wasnít that great of an American Strong or American B-wine. Worth a try, but not another round due to price. Draft at brewer. First this beer has a great scent! Malts, hoppy, caramel and butterscothch? Clear orange color with a large creamy off-white head. Taste is sweet and bitter with a little booze hint. Very nice!

Dark copper color with a thin bubbly head. Super hoppy aroma, with a slight dried fruit backing to it, somewhat like apricots. It was a good IPA, but it was more like a barley then an IPA, but still a good beer.

Bottled@fonefan. Amber colour, beige head. Aroma is caramel, hops, some grains, mild berryish and floral notes. Flavour is quite much the same, but also has some resin and honey along to it. Also alcohol shows quite well. A quite brutal IIPA.

Draft at the brewery. Clear amber with off white head. It has big candy aroma and dense sugary flavor. Sort of cloying aftertaste.

Sampled @ GABF! Burnt tangerine color with a small ivory head. Decent orange peel aroma with a bit of caramel. Flavor is quite sweet and a little cloying with honey, toffee, and malt. Hops are present but hide a bit in the background. ABV hidden pretty well.

Sampled at GABF on 9/16/2010. This Imperial IPA pours a medium orange gold color. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is citrusy and fruity. A medium bodied Imperial IPA. The malts are fruity and sweet. The hops are citrusy and piney. Nice balance. Good carbonation. Big hop bit at the finish. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and crisp. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

Bottle back from NC on the last trip up there. Hops are a present but not overpowering, actually a decent balance here with the malt body working in the form of some caramel and sweetness. Touching a little on my hated band aid, fusel alcohol palate but not so much Iím dogging the beer. Aroma has a little bit of that hop presence but there is a pine aspect to it as well. Flavor is full bodied and coats your mouth well. There is a caramel flavor that fades into a resiny pine bitterness and you are finally left with a touch of orange and sweetness sort of like one of those orange rind candies. Pretty entertaining double here.
