4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Appearance: Nearly opague, black body with a thin, fizzy tan head.
Smell: Roasty, creamy aroma of dark malts, bittersweet chocolate, and even some licorice root.
Taste: Strong, flavorful espresso with sweet, dark toffee and hunks of bakers chocolate. Its really got a raw, earthy naunce to it, especially as hints of licorice and chicory emerge on the smooth, roasty finish. I gotta say I didnít notice the alcohol and had no idea it was supposed to be dramatic 11.7%. Iím blown away!
Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Low carbonation. Luscious, creamy mouthfeel.
Drinkability: I know, I have within me the power to just say "no thanks, I donít think Iíll have that second helping of Pisgah Vortex II", but I mean, when youíre in this personís house for as long as I am, with no real breaks, and you canít go home to spend time with loved ones, and you canít play Super Castlevania for the SNES, it is awfully hard to simply turn away from the only available source of pleasure.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
2 hour, 56 minute old growler from the brewery. Pours ebony with small amber hues and a bubbly tan head that dissipates. Aroma is huge of plums with some sugar cane scents I associate with rum, raisins, grapes, berries, coffee. I donít pick up a lot of alcohol in nose or in the flavor. Espresso comes out a bit more when I sip, but Iím getting more wood and molasses. I also detected nuttiness with suggestions of chocolate. I wasnít too into the aroma, but Iím digging the taste. Maple comes out in the finish.It seems a little rough around the edges, but all in all, itís a tasty effort. I found the Hellbender and the Vortex I to be thicker than this one, this one would probably benefit from that kind of viscosity.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at Barleyís in Asheville. Pours black with amber edges and one finger of tan head. The aroma is slightly nutty with some sweet chocolate, blackberry, and espresso. The flavor is raisin, rum, and espresso. The alcohol is quite evident, especially at lower temperatures. It was tolerable at room temperature, but still gave a strong straight-rum quality to it. Berries and spicy wood tones come in the middle with lots of raw yeast notes. Some chocolate comes out in the finish; the alcohol burn fades in the aftertaste, and leaves a cocoa feel throughout the mouth. Zesty hops hit up front when it gets warmer. Good, but didnít live up to my expectations.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 24, 2008 Draught @ Barleyís Asheville. Pours thick and black with a small off white head. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malthad me very interested in the first drink. Imagine my disappointment when the first taste hit my lips. The 11.7 % was the first thing that I noticed. The chocolate and roasted malts were there, but the alcohol dominated. If this were aged for a while, I have no doubt that it would be excellent. I would like to give this one another try considering I had Foothills Sexual Chocolate earlier that evening. What a tough act to follow.
Re-rate from bottle: Much better flavors come through now that the alcohol has become less prominent.

Draught-Was given sample at Barleyís in Asheville, NC; unbelievable aroma when swirled in goblet glass; moderate head; roasted chocolate flavors with a soft mouthfeel; could taste the alcohol but didnít taste anything like 11.7%; bartender thought I could use a taste with my cigar; I just wish I had ordered a full one;
