7.11.2014. Slightly hazy orange. Aroma has slight sweetness, horse stables, pepper, caramel malts, smoke, orange. Taste has caramel sweet maltiness, zest, hops. Stuffy.

Bomber (pretty!) from Broue Ha Ha, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Vibrant orange-amber with an equally vibrant orange-tan head. Aroma: Fairly smoky in a sharp, not entirely pleasant phenolic way, rich sweet malts behind that, resinous and grapefruit-like hops, has a green peppercorn spiciness, something like a petroleum or diesel exhaust note. Palate: Medium body, relaxed carbonation, feels thin for the style. Flav.: Even smokier than the nose and more phenolic, alcohol, hard to pick out the malt and hop character, but it is there and seems nice, that smokiness is overpowering; lightly sweet with surprisingly gentle bitterness and a finish that allows some of the nice malt and hop character to shine.

Lose the smoked malt and this would be much nicer.

Bottle: Poured a clear light brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with OK retention and some light lacing notes. Aroma of light smoky notes with some toffee and residual sugar is nice but not as powerful as I would have expected. Taste is a good balance mix between some lightly smoked malt with light toffee and caramelized malt notes with average residual sugar level. Body is maybe a little bit too thin for the style with good carbonation and no real apparent alcohol. I was expecting a bigger beer but this is still a very enjoyable and well balance barleywine.

UPDATED: APR 13, 2015 One-year-old bottle. Nose is of biscuity malt with a roasty edge, smokiness, and a touch of floral hops. A very frothy off-white head. The taste is relatively subtle, featuring the same biscuity malt, caramel, vegetables and English-style and floral hops. A skillfully understated smoke element is well integrated. A very soft mouth feel is accentuated by a healthy carbonation. Alcohol is well concealed. Good balance with a slight bitter edge emerging in the aftertaste.

660 ml bottle bought at William J. Walter de Blainville (Quebec), on May 15, 2014. Dark golden honey, medium head. Sweet fruity barley aroma, lightly smoked. The taste is similar, but with notes tropical hops, nice dry smoky aftertaste. A very adventurous and cool barley wine!

Clear copper pour, with a big beige head. Smoky aroma, subtle sweet malts, light cherry notes with hint of scotch, and caramel. Soft mouth feel, and soft carb. Finish is medium to high bitter, with great smoky scotch flavours, and some woody, grassy hops. A very interesting barley wine, very little sweetness, lots of smoke and very bitter. A great sipper.

660ml bottle. Murky orange with a frothy beige head. Flavors are barley sugar, caramel, citrus, tropical fruits, smoked meat and charred wood with spicy and fruity notes. Medium to full body, moderate carbonation, sticky texture.

Bouteille - 660ml.
