Eyedrinkale (3091), Beer Town, New York, USA Mar 8, 2008 Another growler from Slander and thank God this is better then the barleywine. Nice chocolate taste but frankly, not much else. Decent amount of hoppiness but the choice of hops dont really work here very well. MartinT (4241), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Nov 6, 2007 My Bottom Line:
Raw leafy hoppiness and its wooden bitterness attempt to dominate the molasses sweetness in this underfed and rather dry Stout.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam looks into the brown-sleeved black.
-The prickly carbonation plows through the too lean body for the style.
-I didn’t get much of the purported chocolate and coffee flavors, sadly. It was not nitroed either. Is the description in the menu old, or was this batch not what they usually serve?
-The nose was not stoutish at all, mostly showcasing wooden hoppiness and suggesting dryness.
-This was not a bad beer by any means, but it was not a good pint of stout. Much closer to a Schwarzbier, actually.
-After reading previous ratings, it seems like this one was not in top form that evening.
On tap at the brewpub. golubj (947), Redwood City, California, USA Nov 3, 2007 Cask at the Brazen Head. Dark brown appearance. Aroma of some earthy malt, roasted / smoked caramel malt. Flavor is similar with some chocolate malt, vanilla, and caramel. It’s kinda regular. sheatripper (789), Brooklyn, New York, USA Nov 2, 2007 Gravity cask at Brazen Head cask fest 11/07. Coffee and chocolate flavors with some pruney tanginess. Hard to really pinpoint any detailed attributes given the crowded atmosphere, but pleasantly drinkable cask conditioned stout. Nothing that grabs me, but no real complaints either. (Rating #1191)
