COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Has a nice light body but has a definite smoky flavor with touch of jerky. The flavor is quite lovely with little bitterness. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Location/Date:Bottle split with Jay on 2/23/2013.

Appearance: Pours a dark orange cloud.
Aroma: Aroma is yeasty earthy, wheat.
Taste: Wheat, faint sour, faint smoke, nice balance.br/> Palate:Light body, quick finish.

Summary: I like smoke beers and find sour beers to be just okay, but this "traditional" mix of the two was nice.

From notes: Poured hazy straw color with a 1-finger white head. Light smoky aroma with mild lemony and peppery notes. Medium body with a very light oilyness. Lemony flavor with a touch of black pepper and a light smokiness beneath. A touch of earthy yeast as well.

Bottle from South Lyndale Liquors (Minneapolis, Minnesota, 5/12/12)
Aroma: Sauerkraut, wheat, hay, earthy, and smokey.
Appearance: A hazy light amber color with a small white head.
Taste: Medium sweetness and a medium sourness. The smokiness comes in right before the finish.
Palate: Full bodied, slightly thin in texture, with a soft carbonation.
I love sour ales, smoked ales, and wheat ales, so this is a bit of a dream come true for me. If it weren’t a historic style I’d have even called it innovative. I’m surprised by how well everything works together in this one.

500mL bottle purchased at The Davis Beer Shoppe. The aroma on this is lightly to moderately smoky. There is also a light underlying sweet, floral, cereal like maltiness, too. Light wheatiness. Slightly hazy golden-yellow body with a smallish, wear white head that dissipates quickly. Starts with a tartness, which is a bit astringent. Becomes a little smoked in the middle, before some cereal like chewy malt sweetness comes through at the end. Lots of Corn Flakes Cereal flavors late. The astringency kind of overpowers the smoke. This a very interesting beer, and quite enjoyable.

A thick finger of head formed on top of a clear, medium straw colored body. It smells mildly sour and like hay. The taste is sour at the beginning with the mild smoke flavor moving in at the latter half. The sour remains on the aftertaste. It is different and interesting. The sourness is mild enough to appreciate but not enough to ruin it. A good balance. Lighter body and moderate carbonation. Worth trying for it’s uniqueness and it is good in its own right.

500 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, white head, with some lacing, over a slightly hazy, very light amber (SRM 8) body.....nose is light smoke, wheat, light lactic tones.....taste is light sour, smoke, wheat, citrus hints (lemon) ending with a slightly bitter sourness.....mouth feel light, carbonation low. This is much lighter in both aroma and flavors than anticipated. Both the smoke and sour qualities are present but were used with a light hand. The result is a light but moderately complex beer that has wisps of both Rauchbier and Berliner Weisse. BJCP 7/3/13/4/6
