COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

650ml bottle from Discount. Pours a pale orange wirh a foamy white head. Aroma has straw, fruit, wheat and smoke. Taste is of lightish sweet bread, tangy fruit, some citrus and smoke. Interesting taste. Gets progressively more sour and earthy through the glass. Finishes light and sweet. I had no clue what to expect but this was pretty good and an easy drinker.

11/1/12 Nose is faint wheat and a faint light sour. Pleasant, but not much do it and perhaps a trace of smoke although if I wasn't told the style I may not have even caught it. Pours a dark hazy orange with light film and bits of lace. Appearance is more like a iambic than a wheat beer. I know it adheres to purity law - assume this is what all looked like? Taste is light smoke and nice tart wheat. This is a really tasty beer, but the flavor comes and goes. I will say a lot of smoke beers almost linger too long. This leaves ya with a tiny bit of smoke... Can't believe I let this sit in fridge since the summer months. This would be freaking awesome with a non-greasy grilled dish. Grilled Gouda burger during the summer? Call me the match maker ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour is a hazy orange with almost no head at all. Aroma is hard to detect. Some hefe banana and estery yeast but that is faint and there is not much else. Flavor is more pronounced. Some sour notes to start then comes a almost juniper berry. A ever so slight smoke note hits the tounge after the swallow. It’s different I’ll give it that.

Bottle... Cloudy caramel-colored ale with a small, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The nose furnishes wheat, light smoke and a trace of lemon. Medium-bodied with laid-back carbonation. The flavor is perfectly balanced, presenting moderate citric acidity, undemanding bitterness and gentle malted-wheat sweetness with only a rumor of smoke. Short, crisp, clean finish. Bottle courtesy of Elliesbrown!

Bottle. Quite interesting, with many subtleties. Golden body. A light nose. Notes of sweet fruity herbs and light smoked, toasted grains. Hefe like spice and fruit. This beer deserves more attention than I gave to fully appreciate. Well made though.

Enjoyed via a bottle from Discount Liquor. Pours a cloudy brown mustard color with a scant head (some lacing). Smell is a mix of grass and hay. Taste is creamy with a light smokey flavor. Typically I cannot stand the taste of any smoke in a beer, so this is the first one I’ve actually enjoyed drinking because it does not overpower the beer at all. The finish is bitter in a sweet or very sour citrus sort of way. I assume it is the hops but some dryness from the sugar. It was quite an enjoyable beer...especially for a smoked beer.

Pours to a really hazy chestnut colored body with a thin white head. Aromas of slightly tart wheat and juniper berries with some nice beechwood smoke. The flavor has a moderate sour mash component (but it really isn’t "sour") with a significant wheat component and light juniper berry. It is as though this is a sahti, but still German in its purity requirement. The palate is smooth and easy drinking with a velvety texture and light tartness. I quite enjoyed this unique beer.

Bottle. Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is hazy medium to dark yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly yeasty (cobwebs), with a note of banana, light note of smoke. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. Really not much going on here...mild aroma and fairly thin and bland in the mouth.

Bottle. Poured pale golden with a largish white head. Quite cloudy. Aroma was a fascinating mix of light smoke, citrus, tart stone fruit, and some light wheat elements. All of that was in the flavor. Smoke was pronounced but did not dominate. Moderate tartness. Lots of fruit esters, some light banana. Dry finish. Highly effervescent. Delicious and refreshing.
