COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

Bottle. Nose is wheaten, lightly tart with beech smoke that starts slight and gains in prominence. Pours clear golden with medium carbonation and lacing white head, even slight legs. Taste is tart to start but that’s caught and quickly passed by an ultra-smooth and rounded beech smoke. Strong lemony citrus character with some wheat, not intensely flavorful but allows for a lot more (and longer) enjoyment. Just a touch of lactic and the tartness is quite restrained (no one on this site would call this a ’sour beer’). Woodiness detached from smoke also present and long-lasting through the aftertaste, citric hops are a little green, bitterness low, little hints of choice harvest grain here and there, but overall fresh and clean. No signs of alcohol, medium body ... this is a tremendous volume drinker, or quaffer, with a lovely rounded mouthfeel and the grace of extended age. It won’t get the high marks of an imperial stout but it’s made extremely well and I’d rather have this ten times out of ten.

It’s just so mellow and easy-going, balances all its elements and manages significant complexity for such a light beer. [2014.01.20: 4.2]

16oz bottle served in a Sam Adams perfect pint glass A - Pours a honey amber color with a slight haze to it. Small eggshell head on top. S - Softly smoked malts, acidic lemon, yeasty, lacto, white grapes, ripe sourdough. T - Acidic lemon tartness, sweet wheat malts, mildly smoked, grassy hops, dull white pepper, some salty mineral notes on the back end. Lemon notes carry on through to the finish. There’s a dull sweetness that in the background with light lactos/acidity on the edges of the tongue similar to white grape skins. Finishes crisp and peppery. M - A thick and hefty body, creamy carbonation, Soft and mellow smokiness with a little kick of tartness. The wheat malts create a smooth body and the finish is nice and crisp. Peppery/grassy bitterness rounds things off for a clean and refreshing beer that could be paired with food or could stand alone. Serving type: bottle 08-03-2013

A really nice and unusual ale. Aromas are banana and sour lemon. sweet wheat and wheat too. Flavors remind me of a smoked hefe with lemon notes. Quite nice.

A hazed golden Gratzer with a thin white head. In aroma, lemony malt with lactic acid notes, light funky side, nice. In mouth, a sour beer with light fruity notes and bacon smokiness, lactic acid, interesting. On tap at Bad Apple, Chicago.

Advent beer #16: half liter bottle - my first Grodziskie ever. Nose is grainy. Sip adds sweet malts, wheat, and whatever makes it sour. Really light and making it hard for me to pick up on individual flavors. Don’t pick up any smoke. Very easy to drink and interesting, but the body limits it for me. Slightly tart fruitiness aftertaste.

This poured golden with a very slight haze and a thick creamy head of white foam. Haphazard bubbles streamed to the top throughout the drink. Looked like a kristallweizen in the glass.

Nose is tart citrus with a touch of grain sweetness. A wheat dryness and a faint banana. Some spice tickles the nose a bit while the smoke quality of this translated to a woody scent of beechwood.

Taste is very much like a pils. Ha s light body that is smooth and a bit creamy. It’s crisp and the carbonation is just like a good pilsner. The taste is citrusy with a touch of lemon, the natural sweetness of the grain and the tiny touch of banana for smoothness. The smoke in the drink remains light until it warms then you can taste actual smoke. It finishes with a nice tart flourish and a bit of the smoke quality. A nice contrasting sweetness and dry overall.
