COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

From a bottle. This is very interesting, it might take awhile to get used to. Slight smoke and sourness. Otherwise, light and clean.

On tap at Of Love and Regret in Baltimore. Pours a hazy yellow with some head. Funky smell. Interesting. Flavor was sort of bland but not unpleasant. Overall fine.

Bottle. This was a weird beer. Cloudy gold in color. Weird polluted kind of head. Aroma was a light smoky, almost funky kind of smell. Taste was light smoky with a almost sour finish.

Aroma is mild smoke, nuttiness, wheat and a small hint of heat. The flavor is wheat, mild/medium smoked malts, an undercurrent of salt/minerals and and a lingering sour/tart finish.

Ar: Slightest hint of beech smoke, some sulfur - toasted, rich malt. Ap: Clear, amber-gold - medium-large white head with good retention, leaves beautiful lacing, and a thin, but solid, cap of foam. T: Light wheat and slightly toasted malt - a background smoke, but restrained - lemon and biscuit - finish is some spic hops, and grainy malt. P: Light body with very high carbonation - finish is very dry. O: Refreshing wheat beer with some nice complexities, from the lemony sour edge to the background beech smoke - nice!

På fat, 4 oz. Orange med litet vitt skum. Citrus, banan, örter och ovan detta en svag rökighet. Samma återkommer i smaken, fast här är rökigheten mer påtaglig. Njutbart sur.

Unfiltered orange-tan. Thin white head. Medium bodied, very smooth and creamy on the palate. Banana, tangy hops, mild smoke, clove, bubblegum. Really pleasant sour tones. Hyper sessionable.

Sampled from a bottle at Where the Wild Beers Are. Hazy yellow pour, very watery, not all that interesting. Kind of meh.

500 ml bottle. Served in a mug, the beer pours a hazy golden/orange color with a half inch off-white head. Both the head retention and lacing are decent enough. The aroma is light, the brew smells like wheat, smoke, and some fruitiness. It mostly tastes like smoked malt and wheat, along with some green grapes/grape skins, apples and a bit of tart lemon. The label says it’s a sour smoked wheat ale, but there really isn’t much tart/sourness in this at all. With that being said, it’s not a bad tasting brew! Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s slick, smooth and easy to drink. At $6.49 a bottle, I don’t think I’d pay that price for this again. But it was nice to try once.

A surprising beer on two counts. One, it is much lighter in color tha I expected and two, the sour takes center stage with the smoke notes in back. Enjoyed every sip though. Very subtle.
