COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Grodziskie or Grätzer is a Sour Smoked Wheat Ale that was brewed in the 1900s in East Prussia and dates back to as early as the 15th century. It was named after the Polish town of Grodzisk Wielkopolski or Grätz in German. Our historic version is brewed according to the German Purity Law with air-dried barley malt and beech smoked wheat malt and hopped with Perle and Saaz. A sour mash is created using the old and forgotten technique called “Digerieren.” Finally a three month aging and maturation process creates a complex sour, smoky and heavily hopped wheat ale.

650ml bottle from Discount. Pours a pale orange wirh a foamy white head. Aroma has straw, fruit, wheat and smoke. Taste is of lightish sweet bread, tangy fruit, some citrus and smoke. Interesting taste. Gets progressively more sour and earthy through the glass. Finishes light and sweet. I had no clue what to expect but this was pretty good and an easy drinker.

Very complex beer. Like of mild hefeweizen then sour but very mild. Then some floral sweetness. If this wasn’t so complex the general public would drink it up heartily as a summery ale. Serving: Bottle

Light hazy golden color. Smoked wheat nose. Taste is great, starts out sour with a little salt and then finishes with smoke. Good beer.

Clear golden yellow. Small off white head. Aroma mostly sweet malt. Light body. Just a little carbonation. Flavor lightly lemony at first, then some off-dry malt, crisp but not overly bitter hop finish. Not really getting much in the way of smoke. Maybe a little wheat in the background. Good balance, very drinkable, nice flavors for being so light.

On tap at Mr Dunderbaks. Strange brew: Gold pour, white head. Wheat and smoke aroma. Tastes are not really sour. Wild part knocks down the smoke some. Not sure what to make of this. 6.2

Säuerlicher, mild hopfiger Antrunk. Dann etwas bitterer werdend, geringe Intensität mit minimalen Kräutern. Enttäuschend. 11/9/8/8//8

Draught(!) at Braukunst Live, München 02/2014. Aroma of wey, peachy wheats and whispy smoke. Pleasant light palate, pillows of eggwhite. Wheat acidity, delicate pale smoke trails and zest. A late, almost lambic-like old hop bitterness kicks in after a while, adding layered and timed complexity to a beautifully designed and revived for sessioning historical beer style. Now only to make it available in sessioning quantities on its continent of origin...

Tap at BKL 2014. Bubblegum and vanilla Weizen aroma, a hint salt and smoke. Yellow, white lace. Medium body, lactic dry. Smoke and spiced salt on a light wheat base. Maggi finish. I liked it.

Bottle. Nose is wheaten, lightly tart with beech smoke that starts slight and gains in prominence. Pours clear golden with medium carbonation and lacing white head, even slight legs. Taste is tart to start but that’s caught and quickly passed by an ultra-smooth and rounded beech smoke. Strong lemony citrus character with some wheat, not intensely flavorful but allows for a lot more (and longer) enjoyment. Just a touch of lactic and the tartness is quite restrained (no one on this site would call this a ’sour beer’). Woodiness detached from smoke also present and long-lasting through the aftertaste, citric hops are a little green, bitterness low, little hints of choice harvest grain here and there, but overall fresh and clean. No signs of alcohol, medium body ... this is a tremendous volume drinker, or quaffer, with a lovely rounded mouthfeel and the grace of extended age. It won’t get the high marks of an imperial stout but it’s made extremely well and I’d rather have this ten times out of ten.

It’s just so mellow and easy-going, balances all its elements and manages significant complexity for such a light beer. [2014.01.20: 4.2]

16oz bottle served in a Sam Adams perfect pint glass A - Pours a honey amber color with a slight haze to it. Small eggshell head on top. S - Softly smoked malts, acidic lemon, yeasty, lacto, white grapes, ripe sourdough. T - Acidic lemon tartness, sweet wheat malts, mildly smoked, grassy hops, dull white pepper, some salty mineral notes on the back end. Lemon notes carry on through to the finish. There’s a dull sweetness that in the background with light lactos/acidity on the edges of the tongue similar to white grape skins. Finishes crisp and peppery. M - A thick and hefty body, creamy carbonation, Soft and mellow smokiness with a little kick of tartness. The wheat malts create a smooth body and the finish is nice and crisp. Peppery/grassy bitterness rounds things off for a clean and refreshing beer that could be paired with food or could stand alone. Serving type: bottle 08-03-2013
