(Draft: Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA) Big Hefe clocks in at 7% according to the beer menu, and I believe it. Big bubblegum nose, and little else, but that’s okay, I like this aroma. Lots of sweet bubblegum and wheat malt in the flavor, but where this "Big" in Big Hefe kicks in is in the palate. It’s quite dense and sticky for a hefe, and it’s between a standard hefeweizen and something like Marin’s Triple Wheat. Dark golden/amber color is quite dark for the style as well, but it’s fully cloudy. Smallish off-white head fades to a partial film atop the beer. Pretty decent overall.

on tap at carlsbad Not sure what is *big* about this hefe. It tasted like a pretty mediocre hefe. There are better choices at pizza port. if however, you’re set on a hefe, this one is ok.

Couldn’t get the lemon slice out soon enough. Very nice full bodied German style hefeweizen. Appearance was a cloudy medium orange with yellow and brown tints. Aroma and flavor include banana and clove with a moderately sweet finish. More of a banana style like Paulner and Edelweiss, rather than a spicy style like Franziskaner. Light and refreshing enough for the hot day, but full bodied enough to satisfy my big beer craving. Oh yeah, the Red Square helped that also.
