On tap at Pizza Port C’Bad. Dark pour with a one finger head that laces nicely. Roasted aroma with plenty of pine/grass hop. Pleasant mouthfeel with flavors of roasted malt, nuts, hops, and a little bit of a smokey aftertaste. Great full flavor that compliments the hoppiness of this IPA. This is my drink of choice at PP.

Guest tap on draught at Dark Lord Days ’08. Pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thin off-white head that has some nice retention and sticky lacing throughout. Aroma of sweet grapefruit, a touch of roasted chocolate malt, some mellon, and pine. Taste is medium to full bodied, light carbonation with flavors of toasted and slightly smoked dark malts, grapefruit and some citrus zest. Finish is semi-sweet with a smoked dark malt aftertaste the slowly disappears.

From tap at Carlsbad. Pours dark brown to black with a little orange glare. Aroma is dense hoppy and fruity. Solid malty and hoppy base flavour. Dry yet smoothly balanced between hops and roasted malt. Dry lingering malty and dense fruity hops flavour. Quite dry in the far finish.

on draft at carlsbad. pours dark with thin tan head. aroma is citrus and some fruit. mouthful is full of hop that is back with roasted malt. had this right after the poormans, so it took a bit to appreciate the hoppiness after that hop bomb. very nice and well balanced black ipa.

Dark brown with a thin tan head. Aroma is strong and hoppy with West Coast prerequisites of grapefruit and pine. Darker malts hit first on the flavor with an interesting roast and a little fruitiness. This is trumped by huge hops. Pine and grapefruit take over and kick my mouth’s ass. Bitter and resiny. Dry and tasty. Unique mix between roast and hops. I liked this one a lot!

Draught @ RBESG10 in Brasserie 4:20, Via Portuense 82, Roma, Italy.

Clear dark brown color with a average to large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, fully lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, burnt, heavy hoppy, grapefruit, pine. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100605]

On tap @ the brewpub. Clear dark reddish brown with a 1/2 finger beige head that fades to a film. Aroma of grapefruit, burnt caramel, piney hops, and misc. nuts--pretty hopped up. Flavor was grapefruit and lots of pine, burnt caramel and burnt toast. Long lingering bitterness. Tingly moderate carbonation, medium body. Not normal for the style, though still pretty good. I almost wonder if I should have placed this under American Strong Ale, but they told me at the brewpub it was a Double IPA.

On tap at Stone brewpub. Pours pitch black with a creamy white head. Monster piney hops aroma which you never expect from this dark of a beer if you dont know its an IPA. Tastes like an IPA, just darker. Its got the hoppy grapefruit taste to it, but nothing overpowering. Very nicely blended and well balanced. Just cool to drink a beer that dark that tastes so hoppy.
