Draft at pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours black with a dense khaki head. Fairly big whiskey notes of the nose but they feel muted to me. It’s mostly bourbon own the tongue with some small malty roast notes. Finishes clean. Solid but I’ve had better examples of the genre.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad, pours jet black with a small brown head. Aroma of strong bourbon barrels, and subdued chocolate and roast. Flavour is very strong, with quite a bit of fruit, fusels, and loads of bourbon. Lots of jagged edges, making this exceedingly difficult to drink. Much prefer the regular Night Rider.

On tap at Carlsbad... Pours a deeper black, solid, and topped with a thin light beige head... Light barrel with smooth bitter chocolate notes. Nice and not overly barreled... Ashy roasted chocolate, smooth with a light bitterness on the backend. Mild barrel impartations and not overly done. Medium bodied with semi-prickly carbonation.

Keg at CBC Clerkenwell, Pizza Port tap takeover. It pours a deep black color with a small brown head. Aroma is intensely bourbon, with vanilla note, coffee and chocolate. Aroma is mellowed out compared to the regular Night Rider, with the barrel softening the bitterness. Creamy on the palate. Good.

Pours pitch black with a small tan head. Aroma has notes of roasted malt, vanilla, oak, alcohol, chocolate and licorice. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and medium bitter with a long warm, vanilla, oak and roasted finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the Carlsbad brewpub. A black one, with a tan head. The aroma is pretty much as the regular Night Rider, but with vanilla and bourbon. Sweeter on the palate, at least it feels so. Boozy and full bodied, with a nice carbonation level. Some warmth. A nice one this as well, but I prefer the regular edition. 130813

On tap at the brewpub. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, vanilla , some bourbon and chocolate. Flavor is sweet and roasted with some caramel, oak, bourbon and coffee. Medium body, average carbonation.

UPDATED: AUG 1, 2013 On tap at Pizza Port in Ocean Beach. Pours black with one finger khaki head, good lacing. Smells of big bourbon, booze, vanilla, oak, dark chocolate, coffee and burnt malts. Taste up front is bourbon, vanilla, oak and burnt malts, coffee and dark chocolate finishes on the back end. Let this warm up and the flavors really shine. Excellent beer!

Pp Bourbon Barrel Night Rider Spring ’12 and Winter ’12: Draft. Superb stuff, big warming flavor with creamy, bourbon heat, brown sugar, dark and milk chocolate. Big mouthfeel and long, coating finish. Just decadent with all the right heft of the barrel aging. Always worth having. 4.4.
