Dark brown with a medium sized beige head. Loads of hops hit the nose and to follow it up plenty of hard roasted malt, pine, grapefruits and hints of coffee. Flavour had loads of hops, pine, grapefruits, lemons, hard roasted malt and caramelish notes. Finished seriously bitter and dry. Nice one.

Draught. Black with a nice medium beige head. Aroma of roasty malt and hops with some chocolate, light smoke touch. Good filling mouthfeel. Flavour of roasted malt, good bitter hoppiness, some fruit, bit smoke, chocolate. Tasty brew indeed!

Growler… This beer rocks!… Pours dark and sits black in my glass with a small, creamy, off-white head. The bouquet is a mysterious whirl of floral hops, ginger, pink bubblegum and sassafras root blended with more subtle notes of mandarin orange and damp leather. Full-bodied and ultra creamy with soft carbonation. The flavor is malty and bittersweet – pouch tobacco, scorched malt and grassy hop bitterness. Bittersweet, burnt finish with a lingering pinch of brown sugar. Growler of world class California beer shipped back to the southeastern USA by plovmand!

Tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Poured a clear, deep brown with excellent to insanely sheety lace. Roast, grapefruity hops in the nose. Taste is a little gross: old tea, old hops, dirty earth, olives, pimento. Briny, salty.

Tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Deep brown pour with a tight tan head. The nose is really bright and hoppy. Very bright, hoppy nose. Lots of hoppy dankness and herbal character over a touch of light cocoa. Brash and chewy with just a kiss of pine on the back of the palate. I get more of the dark malt on the nose than on the palate which is all hops all the way. Intense bitterness on the finish, especially as it warms up. This is another fine brew.

On tap at Pizza Port Carlsbad. Pours with a near black body and an off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, earthy, orange, spicy aroma. Very hoppy. Taste is also very hoppy with tropical fruit, citrus and very light roast (fine by me). Dry and yummy with lively bubbles.

My Bottom Line:
Coniferous hops and their citrusy tips adorn this Imperial Black IPA’s slender roasted and caramel malts, building a spicy, resinous bitterness that lasts ages.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam (those shakers really don’t help head formation) covers the brown-hued blackness.
-Even though the perfume is alluring, this is not as aromatic as their IPAs.
-Alcohol is hard to perceive due to the important hop presence in the finish.
-That flavour profile is, simply put, hop glory.
-Berry undercurrents add to the complexity.
-The underlying caramel malts are rather subtle compared to the hop signature. Not that I was looking for balance in this type of beer though...

On tap at the brewpub.

Draught. Low fluffy off-white lasting head. Pitch black body. Hoppy fruity aroma and flavor with low carbonation and a long aftertaste.

On tap at Mikkeller. The beer pours pitch black with a dense light tan head. The aroma is fruity hoppy with notes of peach, roast, caramel and citrus. The flavour is roasted, caramel, peach, citrus, light pine and some tobacco. Very drinkable.
