Like the sophisticated city cousin of Old Viscosity. Tap and growler from Pizza Port in Carlsbad pours a deep espresso brown with a thick but light colored tan head leaving near continuous lacing. Aroma favors caramel and dark roasted malts with some aromatic citrusy hops. While the beer looks like a porter, it has the sparkly lighter flavors more of a well balanced imperial IPA. There are dark roasted grains, some licorice, coffee, cherries, and a touch of tobacco. But those subtle darker characteristics are blown away by the gang-buster floral hops. The finish lingers mostly in your nose. It feels like a session beer to the tongue, but with an alcohol wallop to the brain.

From tap at MikkellerBar. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is fruity hoppy and hard roasted malt. Fruity, caramel and chocolate flavoured. Thick malty and fruity. Oily. Lingering bitter and dark roasted malty finish. Classic Pizza Port.

On tap at Mikkeller. The beer pours pitch black with a dense light tan head. The aroma is fruity hoppy with notes of peach, roast, caramel and citrus. The flavour is roasted, caramel, peach, citrus, light pine and some tobacco. Very drinkable.

From memory. I’ve had this multiple times on tap at PP Carlsbad and from cask at the same location. Non-cask is my preferred version. Pours dark black with a slight tan head. When fresh the beer is absolutely ripped resinous pine, bitter hops, and a touch of citrus. Just a glorious aroma. Taste follows the aroma with the heavy pine/bitter hops dominating before giving way to a nice, dark malt backdrop. Clean, almost creamy feel in the mouth. One of my personal favorites from PP Carlsbad.

Black with a fizzy white head. Strong citrus and pine aroma with a hint of alcohol. Bigbitter bite with roasted grain chocolate taste and acitrus finish.

My Bottom Line:
Coniferous hops and their citrusy tips adorn this Imperial Black IPA’s slender roasted and caramel malts, building a spicy, resinous bitterness that lasts ages.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam (those shakers really don’t help head formation) covers the brown-hued blackness.
-Even though the perfume is alluring, this is not as aromatic as their IPAs.
-Alcohol is hard to perceive due to the important hop presence in the finish.
-That flavour profile is, simply put, hop glory.
-Berry undercurrents add to the complexity.
-The underlying caramel malts are rather subtle compared to the hop signature. Not that I was looking for balance in this type of beer though...

On tap at the brewpub.

Dark brown with a medium sized beige head. Loads of hops hit the nose and to follow it up plenty of hard roasted malt, pine, grapefruits and hints of coffee. Flavour had loads of hops, pine, grapefruits, lemons, hard roasted malt and caramelish notes. Finished seriously bitter and dry. Nice one.

On tap, PP Carlsbad. Pours black as night, with a white head. Aroma has huge floral hop aspect, with pine and chocolate playing a role. Palate is medium with a slightly creamy element that matched the dark hue of the beer perfectly. Flavor is blasts of flowers, resin and pine, with an ash-bitter delicious finish. Loved this beer throughout, a shame I had it so late in a night of drinking.
