4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Probably th ebest beer I had while in San Diego. I sauntered up the the bar at Newport Pizza and Ale House and asked "What’s on tap?" The lovely barmaid replied that it was Pizza Port’s Black Wave. The then explained that it was a lacto dry stout with coffee Added. "I’ll try one," says I.
Color was adefinitely a five since it was a pitch black stout with an exceptionally creamy cask-made head that was a dark off-white color. Aroma was roasted malt, caramel, and lots of coffee. Flavor was the same, sweet milky cafe con leche with thick dark malt. Flavor was roasty but very smooth, not at all daunting. Palate was silky and glorious.
Unfortunately, this beer was not on the site so the following day I went to Pizza Port in Carlsbad and asked about it. they said that they were waiting a long time for some Cacao nibs to come in the mail to add to it, but they gave up and shipped it out to Newport. Thus, a new version may be arriving soon with cacao.
Good stuff dat.
