Pours murky brown with orange tints and a thin off white head. The nose is grapes and red wine barrel, light vanilla but this is more fruit than whiskey. The taste is where the whiskey comes out, high sweet and low bitter with a nice sweet finish. The texture is soft at first but has some fizzy lingering after. The body is heavy and finish is long. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

San Diego Strong Ale fest 2012. Clear amber color with lasting ivory sheen. Sour pit fruit, wet wood, vanilla, caramel aromas. medium body with soft co2. Lightly sour pit fruit flavors with sweet toffee, vanilla, spicy alcohol--good

Strong Ale 2012. Hazy amber pour with an off-white head. Spicy rye aroma, some wood, and a hint of vanilla. Decidedly tart with some lemon, apple, and under-ripe pear. Fruit, sweet toffee, and toasted malt. Fairly dry on the finish, some rye whiskey, and oak flavors. Lemon tartness, a hint of vinegar, and some alcohol. A bit of malt, lots of apple, and pear.

On tap. Pours with a hazy amber hued body with an off-white head that lasts. Aromas are of dark fruits, spicy, rye whiskey, barrel, toffee. Very chewy. Flavors are spicy, rye, nutty, caramel, toasted oak. A decent amount of phenol. Caramelization. Warming, low carbonation.

On tap at Brouwer’s for Hard Liver. Pours a clear dark amber with a bit of head. Smell is very sweet, candied, almost sour and funky. Taste has some rye in it, bit of alcohol on the end, and a bit fruity. Pretty good beer.

On tap for Hard Liver ’12, pours a mostly clear golden amber with a small tan head. Aroma of port, white wine, and slight rye - quite a vinous and light sourness dominates the nose. Flavour is quite a weird mix of flavours, with sweet liqueur, white wine, rye, and caramel malts. Light-bodied and thin with flavours that don’t really mesh well. Decent but weird experiment.

On tap at Brouwer’s Hard Liver ’12. Pours a transparent copper color, with a deep, earthy whiskey nose -- there’s the rye. Thought it was bourbon until I looked back at the taplist. Fruit and a significant note of bubble gum in the flavor. ... huh.

Draft at PP Carlsbad. Foggy amber with a thin off white head. Aroma is heavy on the fruit and caramel sweetness, not much barrel in the nose. The flavor on the other hand has a healthy does of rye bourbon and oak, with the sugars, fruit, and toffee. Mouthfeel is relatively thin for the high abv.

On tap @ Toronado SD: Poured an amber color with a thin carbonation of head. The nose was simple with a malty nose of caramel with a hint of wood. The flavor has been rightfully developed by the wood barrel aging and has an intense sugary sweetness that is much better than the regular bubonic but still not my cup of tea.

Phone rate, tap at Toronado SD, $5. Clear amber, small light beige, creamy fair retention. Aroma of toasty malts, some light grainy caramel. Flavor adds some spicy alcohol, but not reality getting any rye whiskey notes. Lots of toasted malts, some scorched caramel. Not getting much for bitterness or aroma hops. Semi-dry with some ETOH, bitterness at a 2. Low carb with a med full body. Was hoping for more (or any) barrel character. Did they give me the right beer? Just got a sample, and yep, it is the same. More of a toasty not hoppy BW to me.
