vyvvy (2023), Hazelwood, Missouri, USA Sep 24, 2008 Rating #1700. Huge thanks to xmarcnolanx for sharing this hard to get wonderful and unique beer. Pours dark brown with a dark amber hue and persistent small beige head. The aroma has vanilla, oak, light bourbon, light sourness, cherry, creamy malt, odd funk and lots of other things I can’t describe that makes this one of the most complex beers I’ve ever smelled & somehow it all works together beautifully. Medium body with mouth coasting gentle, but sharp, carbonation. The flavor starts very complex with an amazing blend of flavors. There is dark malt, dark cherries, bourbon that compliments instead overpowers, funky yeast, some alcohol and soda-like effervescence. The finish continues with an amazing complex overload with some things that can be describe and others that can’t (at least by me). This is an amazing beer that is impossible to explain in mere words and would be difficult to fully grasp even after having multiple bottles. Fantastic beer. dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Sep 24, 2008 2008 375 mL bottle courtesy stefanje. Thank you Stefan! Dark brown pour with almost no head. Malty aroma with chocolate, dried fruits, cherry, milk chocolate and very light funk. Taste is sour cherry , raisin, chocolate, wood and alcohol. Full bodied. Tastes a lot like a cherry pie. Seriously, this is dessert. JAXSON (229), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 21, 2008 Updated: Oct 26, 20082007 bottle, thanks Tom. Pours a dark coca-cola brown with a small wisp of a white head. Lost Abbey beers never have enough carbonation. Really sour initial aroma, a bit of sour cherries and balsamic vinegar. First impression upon sipping is of a strong malt base, with chocolate and some dark fruits, yielding to a lighter sourness, heavy with sour cherries and apple vinegar. Nicely integrated flavor. The malt is surprisingly strong here, the strong, heavy malt is a signature of most lost abbey brews I find, and it actually works kind of well with this one. Some alcohol heat around the edges, which makes sipping a bit of a chore at times. The finish is long and leans heavily on the light sour components. Some slightly unpleasant vinegarish tingling throughout. Well-crafted, but strangely heavy and a little hot. dalekliz (546), San Diego, California, USA Sep 16, 2008 Sampled at the brewery for RBSG 08. Pours an amber-brown with a white ring. Sour malt aroma, a bit boozy. Taste is sour and clean, of malt and a hint of fruit. Alcohol quite noticeable. Lingering crisp sourness. Quite tasty. travita (1861), Frisco, Texas, USA Sep 15, 2008 Strong fruit, bourbon, raisans, oak, vanilla, and some tartness in the smell. Pretty much no head. Color is very murky brown. Sort of mud colored. Taste is cherries, other fruits, touch of tartness, and oak. Very complex throughout in a way the works nicely. JJClark (545), Roscoe, Illinois, USA Sep 14, 2008 Bottle from trade with bobkunz23. Thanks again Bob! Pours a dark rich mahogany color with a medium off white head. Aroma of overipe fruit like raisins, dates and cherries. You can also detect the oak and malt. The taste is tart and sour but amazingly smooth and complex. The alcohol is nicely hidden and the flavor begs you want to take another sip. Has a tasty dry finish. Excellent brew! golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Sep 13, 2008 2008 bottle, thought I would pick something special for #999. Dark brown with some red highlights, no head. Aroma is mostly wood, some alcohol, dark malt, light cherry skins, and tartness. Flavor is sort of acidic, very woody, some vanilla and bourbon, dark malt, cherry skins and some sour brett tinges. Sour, somewhat harsh finish. Seems like it needs to settle down. PilsnerPeter (2586), Flushing, New York, USA Sep 13, 2008 Bottle (Thanks giarcsr!) Pours a muddy dark burgundy color with a creamy khaki head. The nose is rich! Toffee, dark malt, vanilla, a pleasant tingle of alcohol, oak- the booziness isn’t sweet, complimenting the oak character. Also has some earthy wood and mild brett character of leather and cherry skins. Substantial palate, both crisp and creamy. Has a nice sharp brett flavor upfront with leather, dust, cheese-rind, cherry skin tartness and bitterness- which is followed by a nice dark malt character with a touch of roast and subtle boozy notes from the bourbon which is never sweet or alcoholic. It’s a perfect marriage of brett-y funk and smooth bourbon/oak. Smooth oak tannins and toasted vanilla as it warms. Extremely well integrated, complex and individualistic.
