CapFlu (3480), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Sep 11, 2008 (375ml Lost Abbey bottle) Thanks to Enniskillen for sharing. Cherries, brown sugar, vinegar, cumin and a very tart red wine finish. Excellent. 8/3/8/4/16 valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA Sep 10, 2008 Poured from 375ml bottle - Sinner’s ’08. Ruddy brown pour with next to no head. Stepping into this one cautiously...aroma is very interesting and chameleon-like...it changes every time I go in for another try. Picking up on the sour cherries each time, but also catching a caramel-malt like flavor, sweet bourbon, mild oak woods, raisins, and a white-wine like presence sitting on top of it all...very nice and gets a 11 for complexity. Flavor takes you on a wonderful ride as well...initially extremely sweet, it almost instantly turns sour and bites hard with flavors of cherry, bourbon, oak, vanilla and a bit of leather. However, after a couple seconds, it changes from sour back to sweet, and gives a plethora of dark fruit flavors mixed with brown sugar. I’ve never had a beer with such a strong sour character change back to a sweet finish like this...simply unique. Smooth while being somewhat high on carbonation, but it fits the style of this beer very well. I left this experience completely satisfied...enough to pay the exorbitant price for such a treat on a rare occasion! Cheers to PP! Zinister (1199), Houston, Texas, USA Sep 9, 2008 Shared by MaltOMeal at the September Houston Tasting. Pours a dark reddish brown with no head. Nose is cherries, cola, raisins and bourbon in melted ice. Flavor is tart and juicy with cherries and bourbon. Palate dances with flavor that are fantastic. Really good beer with lots going on. MaltOMeal (642), Land of Sugar, Texas, USA Sep 8, 2008 bottle. Shared at September Houston Tasting. Pours a dark red with no head. Nose is of bourbon and fruit - cherries for sure. Taste is of cherries, bourbon and wood. Mouthfeel is medium-thin and tart, but although I’m not one for Sour beers, this one went down smooth and easy. walleye (876), Sterling Heights, Michigan, USA Sep 6, 2008 Got this from cquiroga a while back, decided to drink it today. the bottle had the big E om it. All I can say is wow, this is one good beer. aroma bid hit of bourbon, cherris amd other dark fruits hint of vanilla. Flavor another wow, the bourbon and cherries take a front seat on the palate with a nice sourness and followed by vanilla. Good beer. thanks Chris Beerlando (2284), Orlando, Florida, USA Sep 1, 2008 2008 vintage, Sinner’s Club version. The pour yields a dark and brooding ruby red body. A very small, frothy, cream colored head settles to a lasting rim. Soapy lace slowly glides down the glass, returning to the body. The aroma is like a symphony of contrasting elements that somehow come together and agree to get along for the greater good. Fruity elements include fermented boysenberries, pinot noir grapes, and tart cherry skins. Oaky vanilla and the perfect bourbon kiss show the mastery of the barrel application. Mild dark spicing and a dry, wild, bretty bite finish off the wonderful nose. The flavor is considerably more tart than the aroma indicates, the sour cherries forcing themselves to the front of the line. Dark raisons and soured berries emerge as the liquid rolls around the tongue. Like the cherries, the bourbon influence is stronger in the mouth. The oak is woody and sour, not as vanilla driven as one might expect. Semi-dry on the palate, the substantial mouthfeel is very delicately carbonated. The hefty ABV is noticeable, though not overbearing. Overall, this is a fantastic brew, and perhaps the quintessential definition of the term "hybrid". Equal parts Belgian Strong Ale, Sour Ale, Pinot Noir, and Sherry, all with a significant bourbon influence and a tart, bretty overtone. Whatever you call it, I call it "damn good." douglas88 (1557), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Sep 1, 2008 Bottle generously shard by footbalm. Pours a dark red/brown with a small white head. The aroma is just amazing; bourbon, sweet fruit and tart cherries, vanilla, just tons stuff in here. The taste was surprisingly tart; sour cherries, whiskey and bourbon, some funk and yeast, raisins and more of that full tartness from barrel aged sour cherries. A full and medium thick mouthfeel. A great aftertaste like a amazing dessert. Just great. Sour, but also allowing so many other flavors. Thanks Eric for this gem. xmarcnolanx (789), Kirkwood, Missouri, USA Aug 31, 2008 Lot of bourbon in the aroma, but the aroma is not overwhelming. A little bit of dull cherry too....some sourness. Straight up sour, not any brett sourness, just sourness from lactic acid.
Taste is sweet, bourbon, sourness comes in full on the finish with cherry and vanilla comes through too- oakiness makes itself present.
Finish is creamy, slightly tart, and full bodied without being overwhelming.
This is a freaking amazing blend of flavors.
