DoubleBubble (107), Mescal Lakes (wherever that is), Arizona, USA Jun 19, 2008 Shared with cbkschubert. Pours a golden brown color with a very small tan head. Very light spotty lacing. Smells like Brett. Thankfully for me it tastes better than it smells. Light caramel malts, tart cherries, and very light oakiness, with a tinge of vanilla. Leaves a little tartness after the swallow, with a very slight alcohol warming affect. cbkschubert (1945), Cochise Co., Arizona, USA Jun 19, 2008 2008 375 ml bottle via the Sinners program - Pours a hazy dark mahogany color with a 1/2 finger thick light tan head that faded pretty quick. Very light lacing. Aroma is tart cherries and oak/bourbon. Flavor is lightly tart cherries, dark esters, caramel, and oak. The tartness lingers on the palate. Medium body. Slight alcohol warming on the stomach. A nice beer, but not my farorite style. BOLTZ7555 (1053), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Jun 19, 2008 Bottle acquired via Sparky27...Thanks Eric!!! Rusty cinder-colored body with a small white head that disappears in a blink. Nose is cherry skin, red wine, dark fruit, brown sugar and damp wood. Flavor is bold and funky...sour plum, oak, vanilla bean, brown sugar, and again red wine. Unique, tasty, and tart...a gem!!! hellbilly (1502), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Jun 18, 2008 sampled blind with the phoenix crew...
2005 black label 750ml opened (finally) by footy... cloudy woody brown pour with no head. soft notes of bourbon, brown sugar, wood, dark red cherries and fruit with a bit of tart dry funk. the flavor is very oaky/vanilla, malt/brown sugar and soft bourbon with a slight tartness in the middle palate. it gets a bit sour as it warms. smells a whole lot more like bourbon than it tastes and a whole lot more like a strong ale than a sour. medium to full body (probably from the yeast at the bottom!) very well balanced and refined from rudy’s careful aging process... 8/4/8/4/18=4.2
2008 via rusty "don’t call me chilis" chiles... hazy brown with a thin tan head that sticks around. smells like ’funky’ cherry blintzes... tart cherries, cream cheese, sour cream, yeasty cheesy funk and a touch of bourbon/wood/dryness. there’s even a creamy lactic phlegm build up in the mouth. malty sweetness with soft wood up front, cherries, sour cream, fruit and funk. quite tart and fruity. almost like a sour rather than a strong ale and a whole lot more aggressive, brighter and fruitier than the 2005... 9/4/8/4/18=4.3 gunhaver (1024), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 17, 2008 Bottle. Pours a thick, chocolate color, with a white head and decent lacing. Funky caramel aromas, cherries, sweet hops. Flavor has caramel, cherries, distant vanilla, smooth bourbon with some tartness in the finish. Very smooth, and the bitterness combined with tartness in the finish is just about perfect. Gregis (1132), Shawnee, Kansas, USA Jun 12, 2008 2008 Bottle shared by mreusch. Pours a cloudy brown with a light tan head. On the nose are mildly funky, sour cherries, oak and a faint bourbon note. Uber-dry up-front, medium-bodied and tannic with a dry, woody finish. The flavor follows the funky cherry nose. It’s a tasty brew, but I wasn’t as blown away by this one as I’d hoped I would. Nevertheless, I’m very thankful to have had the opportunity to try this one. Thanks again, Matt! cloudskipper (12), Alameda, California, USA Jun 12, 2008 2008, 375 ml bottle acquired from ironchefscott, thanks! Poured into RR glass. Brown color, very slight head. Smells sour, but not overly so. You get a decent sour in the taste, but also some of the bourbon barrel that this beer was aged in. Alcohol was decently hidden, but I felt the bourbon burn in my throat for a long time after. For me, it doesn’t get a lot better than this. A beer with sour elements aged in bourbon barrels. Love it. Really glad I got the opportunity to try it. mreusch (715), Olathe, Kansas, USA Jun 11, 2008 2008, 375ml bottle from Sinners. Pours a cloudy brown with ruby highlights and a thin tan head. Aroma is sour cherry, light oak, light bourbon and funk, and some general tartness. Flavor is more sour cherry, oak, and a bit of funk. There’s a nice, yet indiscernible finish on this that’s a bit of cherry skin maybe. This is a solid beer with nice aging potential, but a little "young" right now. I’m interested to see what the brett funk can do to compliment the sour cherry in a year or so...
