puzzl (2579), New York, New York, USA May 27, 2007 Rating #900. 375 fresh bottle from Moejuck. Pours completely, totally dead flat. I’d wonder if there were something wrong but other people mentioned it, so I dunno. Aroma is lightly tart cherries, raspberry, chocolate malts and hot alcohol. Not too much complexity. Taste is much bigger, bustling with activity, dark breadiness/pumpernickel and warm malts up front, raspberries along the side of the tongue and a dry, slightly chalky finish. Very chewy and filling with little heat in the taste. Muddled wine and grains skirt the tongue at the fore. I must admit, I’m pretty disappointed with this. It really, really needs some carbonation. One of the most appealing attributes of fruited beers like this is the spritziness they gain from the carbonation, almost like a highly complex and rich soda. This is completely missing that, and really I don’t think it’s that complex, either. With carbonation this probably would’ve done 4.2 or so. I’ve got a black label 750 sitting in the cellar, we’ll see how that one goes. nolankowal (850), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 24, 2007 CT7 Bottle shared by moejuck. Black Label: Dirty brown pour witha light tan head. Aroma of oak, brown sugar, brett, booze and sour cherry. Flavors of sweet malt, sour, and dry cherry. Medium body, bitter/sour/sweet throughout with a dry/sour finish. Awesome!
The new version: Similar in appearence. The aroma held some more bourbon qualities to it and a little less sour. The flavor wasd a bit more sweet as well and perhaps a bit less dry. Still good stuff though. moejuck (1165), Ohio, USA May 22, 2007 C-bus 7. Black Label older version: Warm aroma with light sour fruit--nice. Murky brown body. A medium palate lies under tastes of spice, fruits, and yeast with the expected light sour cherry flavor behind it all. Nicely done.
New version: Pretty much the same as the older version, though the alcohol is more detectable for certain and I think it has a more complex flavor actually. I would rate the new version just slightly higher than the old. spector (906), Lancaster, Ohio, USA May 21, 2007 Got some slight spice and some alcohol in the aroma.Pours a deep mahogany with a medium off white head.Dark fruits, licorice and alcohol stood out in the flavor.Medium to full mouthfel with a big alcohol finish. LeopoldStoch (201), Green, Ohio, USA May 20, 2007 Black label 750 ml bottle and new ’07 375ml bottle shared by Moejuck and Spector...Thanks guys! I think I enjoyed the newer version more, but it is apparent it still needs some time as it is very young and the alcohol is present...but it is very easy to see the potential in this beer. The nose has some yeasty spicyness to it with oak and sour cherries coming through as well. It is also fairly easy to pick up on all the brett in this beer. Overall a great belgian strong ale, and one of my favorite beers from Pizza Port/Lost Abbey. sliffy (1966), Columbus, Ohio, USA May 20, 2007 C-Bus 7 Bottle shared by moejuck: Pours amber with an off white head. Aroma, caramel, some spice, oaky. Flavor, slight smoke, caramel, fruity, tart, yeasty, a hint of tobacco. That the first batch. Also had an ’07 bottle that was more oaky, and boozy, with a bit more heat, not as soft as the older bottle. alafito (334), tijuana, Mexico May 16, 2007 COMPLETLY FLAT. I bought this at there 1st aniv. Not that it must have a head or anything like that, but just a tiny bit of bubbles to bring out that amazing aroma. I mean just a tiny head, wouldve made this beer a perfect 5!. Also i would catagorize it as a BSA. Its much more of a Kriek/Lambic a Flemish Sour or even a Barleywine. The flavors in this liquid are pure heaven... In order of apperance are: Sour Cherries, Peaches, Vanilla, Oak, Yeast, Raisins, Plums, tobacco, lactobacilus, earth and champagne... and that was just the first sip! It matures changes and gets even more complex as you keep trying to figure out whats in this. The palate, apart from the obvious lack of life, is actually pretty smooth and velvety, no alcohol noticeable but it does give more of a wine palate than an ales. The finish is sweet and tart with some brettanomyces and dryness at the end. Incredibly complex and creative, i really wish it was a fluke and the second bottle i bought is better. fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA May 10, 2007 375 ml bottle. Wow this beer has a lot going on. First aromas out were the sour cherries. Backed with some lighter fruits such as apricots or mango. On the flavor there was at first some dark earthy flavors and raisin. The sour flavors were quick to join in with their cherry. Alcohol is barely even noticeable. Wow what a beer!
