Tap at the Monk. Toffee and caramel on the nose, slight malt sweetness in the taste which drops away quickly finishing a tad thin.

A: The pour is a dark brown color with a touch of red highlights to it as well. A finger of tan head caps it off. S: Lots of nutty aromas along with plenty of cocoa, roasted malt, and dark chocolate. Toffee and caramel provide the bulk of the sweetness and there is a nice toasted malt character as well. T: The flavor profile is pretty much the same as the smell. A nice sweetness of toffee and caramel, as well as milk chocolate. A touch of bitter dark chocolate, roasted malt, and the usual nuttiness. M: Medium in body with a moderate carbonation to it. D: A really solid brown ale. A nice, but not overwhelming, sweetness to it.

On draught at Maui Brewing Company in Lahaina, HI. The beer is a dark brown color with a medium tan head that diminishes to an outer ring eventually. Rings of lacing on the glass. Malty aroma with some dark fruit and coffee notes. Medium body with a rich malty character and flavors of roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate and raisins. The finish is malty with a lingering roasty sweetness left behind. Pretty good all around.

(on tap at carlsbad). Pours dark brown with off-white head. Aroma is smoky dark coffee. Taste is sweetish (but watery) and has a dry bitterness. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Finish is bitter. I’m not a brown ale fan, but I do prefer it with hops.
