COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original Pizza Port location in Solana Beach, we searched high and low and combined 15 of our favorite hops which were added every 15 minutes to the boil. Somewhat darker than other Double IPA style beers, our beer oozes the hop goodness of pine needles, freshly squeezed citrus and ground spices which are only moderately tempered by a sweet malt finish. Thankfully, for all of us hopheads, we have decided to brew this beer more than once a year. Look for Hop 15 to make appearances from time to time when space permits us to brew this, one of our favorite ales.

12 oz draft on tap at Binny’s South Loop (Chicago, IL). Pours a highly bubbly bright amber with sunny gold notes, light hazed with a minimal white head. Aromas are hoppy, citrusy with a subtle maltiness. Citrusy orange and grapefruit steal the aroma show. Initial taste is hops, floral bouquet with grass and some subtle resinous pine. Lighter carmel malts mixed with some biscuity notes. Hops are special: sharp but relaxing floral and citrus of grapefruit, orange, and some lighter pine. Touch of tropical in the backend. I liked this a lot. Fresh. Very nice.

Pours bright gold into a tulip. Fluffy white head leaves little lacing as it slowly recedes. Pine and citrus aromas. Creamy caramel, pine and citrus. Lasting bitter finish.

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2007 Hazy, light amber body with a large, off-white head, lasting, nice lace. The aroma is grapefruit, floral, tangerine, cotton candy and light herbs. The flavor is honey, grapefruit, orange and a touch of caramel. Medium/full body is round with moderate carbonation.

UPDATED: AUG 27, 2008 Growler: Pours a nice rusty orange color, cloudy with a thick tan head that laces. Very aromatic. Huge hop notes of orange, pine, light perfume hints and mint. The amazing malt depth balances the hop monster. Has a toasted bread characteristics & buttery toffee that blend perfectly with hop notes of orange-rind, peach, and pine needles. Finish is long smooth and bitter. An outstanding and balanced IIPA.

22 oz bottle from Bev Mo Carmel mtn. Other than this beer having a very cool label, its magic in your mouth. Seriously, big nose of pine, grass, grapefruit.....and more pine. One of the best double’s out there.

UPDATED: JUL 31, 2004 (Draft & 750 ml bottle: O'Brien's in San Diego, CA) This 2IPA is superb and really more a barleywine; Malty, very sweet, high in alcohol, but balanced by a very strong hoppy bitterness with lots of grapefruit, especially in the long lasting finish; Great, hoppy nose with loads of sweet malt aroma too; Thick, sticky palate; Dark ruddy amber in color; On draft, there is a light tan head with average retention and rings of patchy lacing, but out of the bottle, there is no head, just a few large bubbles that dissipate immediately; One of Port Solana's best!

Well, the fifteen varieties certainly do generate a massive aroma, floral and with a big citrus quality. Deep amber, with a modest head, it’s a lively looking beer that promises West Coast DIPA majesty. It mostly delivers, with an extremely aggressive taste - big surprise, right? Most of the hop profile is fairly acerbic, deeply resinous with the citrus/spice bite you’d expect from this brewery. But it’s slightly indistinct, lacking any kind of smoothness (not necessarily a problem in itself) and definining characteristics other than sheer balls. A fine experiment, an enjoyable brew, but somehow not top notch.
