awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA Nov 10, 2006 From draft. Pours a slightly hazyhoney gold with a huge serving of foamy white head. Huge high alpha hop aroma - fantastic, dripping with white grapefruit and concentrated spruce sap. The aroma is incredibly powerful and intoxicatingly fresh. The weight of the body is a bit of a shock after being tantalized by the nose. Its a bit on the heavy and sweet side, which seems to hide some of the desired bitterness behind the somewhat sweet malt backing. Still, the spruce sap and white grapefruit zest hop characters come through satisfyingly and the added touch of floral honey that comes through at the end is quite nice. I find myself wanting it to be a bit dryer with more bitterness after being tantalized by the intense nose, but its still quite nice nonetheless. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 8, 2006 On tap, Dr. Bill and Stiney’s 12 hour beer bash, 2006. Pours a slightly hazy copper body under a small whispy off-white head. Aroma is intense citric hoppiness, some lighter doughy malt, and an dried leafy note. Flavor is very bright biting hoppiness. Finishes very citrusy with alot of lingering bitterness. The malt is lurking in the background, but stays there from front to back. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with moderate prickly carbonation. Really very good, perfectly balanced in it’s un-balancedness. JohnC (2230), Mission Viejo, California, USA Nov 5, 2006 On tap at Dr. Bill & Steiny’s beer bash, this hop monster was very tasty. Lots of citric hop flavor with good malts backing them up. HopheadHans (753), Bay Area, California, USA Nov 4, 2006 Tap@Toronado. Pours with a copper color and a nice head. Strong aromas of flowers, hops. Flavors are fairly complex and there is lot going on:flowers, hops, malts hints of flemon and grapefruit. The finish turns slightly sweet. Excellent. TAR (2087), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA Nov 2, 2006 Draft: Clear gold. Thick and creamy foam slowly subsides. Pleasant but not overly seductive nose of honeysuckle, orange marmalade, peach, dried strawberries, and fresh cut grass. Feisty, pointy carbonation. Multilayered hops generate a juicy burst of peach and mandarin orange flavors coupled with soft flowery suggestions. Equally bitter, however, with loose but numbing notes of pine and tangerine peels. Juicy citrus complements the resinous sting. Malt lends a gentle dusty texture, but never steals the limelight from the hops. Flavorful hops and the well-executed attenuation absorb the potentially unruly resins. Alcohol comes and goes, but imparts a swift dryness. Finishes numbingly bitter yet fairly brightly flavored and succulent with a delightful medley of ensuing citrus hop burps. Alcohol is well hidden, attenuation is nearly perfect, and the yeast is never a detriment. With that said, the hop character needs more brightness all around, and the aroma, in particular, is a tad simplistic and unrefined. Respectable. davidflores99 (225), Long Beach, California, USA Nov 2, 2006 Had some at the Stone Brew festival. I really liked this! Very hoppy, just like I want it. Flavor was nice and citrusy and aroma was hoppy and sweet. I want more of this, awesome stuff. jmcguire1969 (149), Lafayette, Colorado, USA Oct 31, 2006 On tap at Mountain Sun durring their Hop Harvest Month.
Ok, I know this is a high rating but damn is this a good very complex beer. The flavors that come through at this ABV was amazing to me. It had hop aroma that knoked my socks off, the flavor had citrus and pine notes, and followed up with a wallop of bitterness that must have taken a trailer load of high alpha acid hops to produce. I wish I had taken home a growler of this one. bb (2905), Martinez, California, USA Oct 27, 2006 Draft. Bronze beer with a nice white head. Sweet malt aroma thats dominated by hops - big hop aroma with grapefruit and summer fruits. Big grapefruit/summer fruit flavor with lingering grapefruit bitterness. Some pine notes, but more fruity hops. Rich body and alcohol well hidden. Delicious.
