FoBAB. Dark orangish red. Sour aroma of cherries, plus citrus and oak notes. Flavor is cherry, milk chocolate, dark fruit, caramel. Smooth, oily mouthfeel.

Woody, herbal aroma is bursting with dark cherries and sweet tropical fruits. Hazy brown-tan body with a low, white head. Strong dark cherry flavour is fairly tart with leafy and woody notes and lasting tropical fruit character. Medium light body with fairly lively carbonation that engages the tongue. Sampled at GABF 2005 and also at DenverLogan’s GABF party.

Draught, sampled at the 2005 Festival of Barrel Aged Beers, Chicago: Enormous off-tan head that eventually dissipates and gives off a sour, woody (oak) and sweet mango-honey aroma. The thickness of the aroma increases overtime and exudes pineapple and other tropical esters. Sharp and tart but not assaulting…the tropical fruits turn tart and acidic, but hold the backbone of malts in tact. Tingling carbonated finish. Excellent.

Several pours at the 3rd annual FoBAB (on tap). Poured a rusty blood-red with a medium creamy tan head. Complex aroma of darker fruits & berries, sour cherries, caramel, brett, and a light oakiness... overall rather similar to cherry-flavored "pucker" candy with some funky yeast. Light and effervescent mouthfeel, with a persistent cherry sourness and an almost prickly feel toward the back. Sour cherries were the driving force for the first half of the drink, giving way to caramel and other sweet malts on the back-end. Oak and vanilla undertones worked quite well. Back to tart and sour cherries on the long, bubbly finish. This was a challenging and rewarding experience.

Reddish, woody brown with a huge, creamy tan head, this had a sharp, sour aroma of cherries, plums, and berries. Nicely carbonated, the sweet malt comes through in the flavor, well balanced with the fruity tartness. It finished on a face puckering, sour fruit note. Very nice.

Mahogany body under an ample tan foamy head. Very fruity nose, hard sour candy balls, underlying vanilla. Champagne feel in the mouth. The flavor was sour berries.

3rd FoBAB. Enormous brown foam sits atop reddish brown hazy beer. Plum, passionfruit, raspberry, pineapple, lightly toasted grains, brown malt and caramel make up most of the rather complex nose on this beauty. The body was fantastic, with lovely carbonation and a light, prickly sensation at the back of the throat. The flavor showed a nice, balanced blend of tart acidity and sweet malt. The alcohol was virtually nonexistent. More oaky flavors show up in the mouth, to combine with the sour cherries, tart apples, sweet caramel, whole grains and more passionfruit. A long, tart finish rounds this out. A spectular beer with great flavor, balance of Brett-tartness and mild sweet malt. Another classic from Solana Beach.

GABF- Pours brown cloud with a light brown head . Vanilla and sour candies in the aroma with a lot of oaky sourness. Med.-light dry body. Heavily sour with chew malts playing a nice side roll. Very drinkable. Incredibly dry and another great beer from Solana beach.

Another highlight of the GABF for me: Poured brown with the little bit of head you get from GABF samples. Brett aroma with cherry. Sour and sweet flavor of cherries and the usual flemish sour characteristics. A very nice beer that will be bottled I heard.

Hugely focused sour cherry nose might not be the most complex, but rings an aura of pleasure that is just undeniable. Juicy and tart flavours emanate from the muddy copper hue that barely wears a ring of off-white head. Upon further evaluation, discoveries of grape, kiwi and litchi undertones can be found underlying a vanilla essence. If its soul comes from the cherries, its strength radiates from the cask wood ammunition that procures it the necessary red wine tones to showcase its tartness among all its earthiness. A globally sweet example that knows what the important things in life are.
