03/11/2012 Brasserie 4:20 (tap). Nera, densa, impentrabile, schiuma color cappuccino, abbondante e incredibilmente persistente. Al naso sentori di malti tostati, caffé, leggero cacaco, liquirizia, note di pane bruciato. In bocca è prevalenetemente amara, con note di malti tostati, crosta di pane bruciato, caffé. Corpo medio-pieno, carbonazione corretta. Imperial stout magnifica, equilibrata in maniera mirabile.

Virtually opaque ebony. Whipped tiny-bubbled dollop of rich tan foam. Cocoa, nougat, earthy roast, and burnt cookies comprise the aroma. Sits tightly on the palate with a silky-soft creaminess. Beautifully conditioned. Immediately complex interplay between char and punchy roast. Quite viscous despite the prominent fluffiness. As the viscosity steadily climbs, inky notes unite with a fudgy thickness to lend more palate coating softness. Hint of cakey yeastiness comes and goes, but this is otherwise devoid of flaw and clean as a whistle. Snappy crumbled cookie underlay paves the way for a bitter espresso trail. Muted dried plum and metallic malt tingle. Minus the warmth, there’s scarcely a hint of alcohol. Velvety stacks of chocolate malt buttress the gritty char with ease, as toffee slowly creeps in. A moist bed of roasted grains blossoms late, but it remains predominantly charred and gritty with a tar and nutty java finish. I can only dream of seeing this on the handpump someday. Straightforward but extraordinarily complex. An eternal thanks to cquiroga.

Hand bottled sample shared courtesy of egajdzis. Poured a dark black color with a very small sized off white head. On the initial whiff I got a nice milk chocolate smell that gave way to smoke, roasted malts, some dark fruits and some vanilla. Tastes of chocolate, roasted malts, vanilla and a light bitter coffee finish.

Holy shit, I’m the 5th Pennsylvanian to have rated this stuff! We PA guys take no prisoners. Thanks to an anonymous benefactor for this one. The pour was obsidian with almost no head other than a few tan spots. The aroma was of big roasty malt, molasses, some tobacco. The flavor was very malty with a decent fruit component, molasses, and some chocolate. Very palate dense with very little carbonation. This one is great!

Hand bottled sample shared by Eric at Steves place a while ago. Luckily I found my notes for this one. I got the bottom of the bottle, so there were lots of yeasties floating around, but it was still magnificent. Deep dark black and a thin tan head and nice lace. Lots of roasted barley, coffee, chocolate and a nice sweet aroma. Very thick and sweet taste with chocolate, toffee, lots of roasted barley and balanced very well with hops, and leaves a nice clean bitter finish. Very smooth overall.

Tap @ O’Brien’s. Reminds me of old Rasputin. Excellent imp stout with plenty of spiciness in the coffee, chocolate, & hop flavor mix. Alcohol is noticable but fits in well. Malt sweetness not overdone, with enough hop bitterness to balance everything out well. Nice, long bitter/sweet finish.

Draught. Black body with a bubbly mocha head. The aroma is quite raisiny with hints of chocolate, vanilla, and sweet malts. Fluffy light body, surprisingly considering the advertised strength, with lots of chocolate and a minute hop presence. Tonnes of roast espresso and plum notes. Excellent.
Enjoyed a pint at O’Brien’s on March 23, 2007.

Cask at PP Carlsbad, damn I’ve wanted this beer for a while and I get it on Cask, just my luck on the thursday from heaven. Pours black with a half finger light brown head. Nose is smooth and sweet and rich. Taste is sweet, chocolatley and smotth. Holy shit this is awesome!
