The brewer said it was brewed at san clemente, not carlsbad and that the abv 6.3% not 4.5, whatever....
it’s a nice copy of newcastle DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Jul 2, 2005 (Draft: Pizza Port in Carlsbad, CA) Oh, I get it, this is their approximation of Newcastle. It didn’t hit me until I tasted it. Well, I must admit, it’s a damn good copy of a mediocre beer! Lightly sweet, nutty and malty, there’s just not a whole lot of flavor here, though I understand that’s by design. The nose is pretty light as well, very mildly malty and a little sugary, but mostly just smells like generic beer. Light to medium body. Light brown color and very hazy, so that’s one difference from the bottled Newcastle I’ve had. Light tan head is small initially and then quickly fades to a small halo surrounding a smattering of small, swirly bubbles. While I applaud the brewer (I assume it was Kirk) for doing a great copy, the bottom line is that this isn’t a style of beer I enjoy.
