On tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach; July 2012
The beer arrives from the tap with a lightly browned, dark tan head. The beer is a concentrated brown tinged, mostly black color. The aroma has a burnt fruitiness to it, as well as a solid, smooth, roasted grain character. This last leans towards a roasted nutty note after a short while, and the more I dig in, the more this gets focused on the roasted character that leans towards cocoa and a touch of roasted coffee.

Smooth toasting and roasted up front, this picks up some carbonic bite, and a burnt tartness that adds some liveliness to the middle. The finish is bitter with roasted malt notes as well as with hop character. Fairly smooth, but it has enough of a burnt, roasted edge to it to sharpen things up; this is amply flavored, and a sipping brew due to the big malt character. While this has a medium’ish body to it, I don’t feel that its overly heavy, this is definitely something to drink by the pint, even if that might be a little dangerous. The roast character is ample, but can’t hide a big, roasted prune like character that is also easily tasted, after I notice it.

This is a nice Stout; it has definitely hit the spot and my cravings for a Stout to finish off my stay here. This is definitely a roast dominated brew, it is fairly focused in this character, but there is just enough other things going on to make it work quite well.

Draught at the brewpub. Opaque, black liquid with medium off-white/tan head. Aroma of coffee, ash, fruity hops, biscuit and cereal. Taste is dry and light to medium bitter with notes of coffee, ash and fruity hops. Full bodied with medium carbonation. Quite hoppy for an impy, but still nice.

Growler provided by Chris, poured into a Cigar City snifter... The beer pours a light black, with some dark tan head, ok retention and lacing... The aroma is standard, bitter dark chocolate with some smoke, light hop finish. Not bad, but not exciting me... The taste is right on with the nose, an average and tasty stout, but nothing crazy. Dark chocolate, a little roast bitter finish. Slightly above average stout, I’d drink at Pizza Port but wouldn’t go out of my way.

Draft at Haymarket. Pours a deep black/brown with a tan head. Nose is quite chocolatey with some pleasant roasty bits. Nose pleasant piney hops as well. On taste, there is more of the chocolate and some charcoal notes. Carafa? Quite cleanly fermented and balanced, really ties together as it warms. Has a fair level of hoppy notes as well, more of the floral and pine. Quite well made beer.

Growler thanks to Chris from ba. Nice... Pours a predominantly stouty pour with a medium consistency and topped with a light beige head... Aroma is adequate and roasty with chocolate notes, solid double stout aroma... Flavors are sweet upfront, through the middle with a follow-up with roasted malts with a bittering backend. Body is solid with enough carb. A bit of residual sweetness towards the end but the bittering roast cuts through that.

UPDATED: JUN 7, 2012 (Draught) Pours black with almost no head. The aroma holds hard roast - liquorice, espresso, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, brown sugar and asphalt. Some piny and earthy hops alongside a touch of vanilla and meat. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light to medium bitter and tiny acidic with notes of hard roast, balanced hops, brown sugar, vanilla and a touch of dark fruits. The mouthfeel is creamy, soft and light sticky with a light carbonation. Roasted and brown sugar-ish aftertaste. Medium to full bodied.

Draught @ Mikkeller Bar. Notes of vanilla, chocolate, molasses, milk, cofeebeans and fruit. Maybe a bit thin, altough drinkable.
