4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2007 PP SAF: Deep reddish brown with a creamy head and good lace. The aroma has notes of cashews, milk chocolate, raisin, tangerine, anise, coffee, and a bit of wood. The taste has rich dark malt and caramel tones with a hoppy bitterness. Woody, fruity and a somewhat pungent. An aggressive biting mouth feel over a lush coating. I really dig this, sort of old school in it’s approach.

(Tasted at Solana Beach). Almost as dark as the rye beer with a full bodied malty fruit and a slightly sour creaminess at the back of the palate. Good hoppiness but not as strong as an American barley wine. I wish they’d told me that this was a barley wine as I was driving.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very dark. Great malt flavorings with a subtle bit of alcohol. One of the best barleywines at a great festival.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very dark for the style. Strong caramel/fruity malt and very hoppy. An assertive brew from a brewery that basically dominated the 2002 Real Ale festival. This was my favorite of their 3 barleywines I sampled there.
